Is replacing the dash with aftermarket gauges legal?

I want to remove the guts of the dash in my 88 FC and use Stewart Warner Maximum Performance tach/speedo /water/oil/volt/gas/gas-psi gages. I was wondering if it is street legal to do such.

It doesn't modify the way the car runs or drives and if you install them right, they are no danger to the driver. We can put radical paint jobs on the car and it isn't a problem, so what would make vital engine instruments illegal?

Hey Kamakazie,

What's the advantage to that? What does it look like?

I figured the odometer? or some sort of safety instrumentation. But those Stewart Warner gages at summit look real sexy. Black with orange needles.

Plus it really is not street legal anymore... megasquirt... rb duals.. and TWM 50mm ITBs...

Sleeper it is i guess!

I think you'll have to check with your local department of motor vehicles regarding the proper procedure for replacing guages. If I'm reading your question right, your trying to avoid mileage fraud accusations correct?

i THINK what happens is on the car title it is noted that the odometer has been changed, kinda like if you fix a writen off car it is noted that the car has been writen off.
