Your flywheel should be fine. Since you're replacing the clutch, you can replace the flywheel if your little heart desires for a stock or lightened version. If your flywheel were bad, you'd be having starting problems, such as the starter not being able to grab a hold of the flywheel and crank the engine.

treat the procedure as if you where changing out your break pads. inspect the rotor (flywheel surface) to make sure there are no gouges or burned spots. if there are, get it machined. if not, wipe off all residue on the surface with a solvent, and use the alignment tool to align the disc to the flywheel. then make sure the clutch disc is facing the right direction. its labeled appropriately with (flywheel side) where you have that side facing the flywheel. bolt the pressure plate on there, and make sure the bearing on the clutch fork is changed out as well. now take off the alignment tool, and try to finagle the transmission back in. this will take either 10 minutes, or 1 whole day or two depending on if you get the splines line up or not. heh. then you are good to go. just remember, dont force anything. make sure nothing it getting pinched between the tranny and the engine.
remove the fluid as well. watch out for fluid in the shifter housing, and tail shaft. that **** gets on you. tastes like ****.
i think i just pretty much summed it all up for you.

Your flywheel should be fine as previously stated but I are definitely going to want to have it resurfaced. It isn't very expensive. Usually somewhere between $50-$80. I just had mine done for $53.

this is 100% erronious. the starter uses that flywheel ring gear to spin it. it has nothing to do with the clutch at all. period. end of story.

Don't expect your flywheel to be fine, I did and had to scramble while my car was at the shop on a lift with the trans out, to find a good used flywheel. Mine just had spider fractures, but it still started and ran fine, I even drag raced it at the local street legals. It sucked and took the shops space and time. If I had planned better I would have just bought an aftermarket flywheel.

I recently replaced my clutch and flywheel (and all the seals and bearings associated w/ the trans. .....trust me, you won't want to do it again anytime soon). Its a good thing I replaced my flywheel as it was cracked in no less than 10 different places! I guess it depends on how the PO drove? but keep in mind that things has seen at least 20 years of whoknowswhat.
Not all flywheels are crazy expensive...although if you've been looking on the Mazdatrix website I can see how you might come to such a conclusion. Check the classifieds, I got a stage 3 clutch, flywheel, Throwout and pilot bearing for under 400. Its a good mod to do, especially on an N/A, It makes a noticeable difference.
