Its about time to replace my HKS mega flow intake, I think. I can't find replacement foam pieces in any online stores. Would it be best to just buy a generic K&N and fix it to the metal adaptor I already have?

Thats what i would do.

or, i saw an awesome comparison of airfilters about 6 months ago. the Apexi air filter had highest flow AND the best filtration.
i don't know where to find a generic Apexi air filter tho.

Buying the cone filter and making your own adaptor/pipe/clamp is the way to go. Why spend 3 times what you need to in order to get the exact same thing in the end?

All the name brand cone filters basically are equal when it comes down to how much power you will increase. There is a thread just recently in this forum about it (started by Saku). Inside you will find a comparisson done on a supra testing out all the different brands on the same car (the type of car is irrelevent) and they all ranged from a 13-14 hp increase... maybe even closer than that. The only difference was the quality of air filtration.

Buy a filter for $30, some piping, clamps, etc for $15 and you have a system equal to the $150 system your 3rd gen owner friend just wasted his paycheck on.

 

Haha, I think FD intakes are more expensive than that aren't they? I think I saw the HKS one on the rx7store.net for over $300.

Chalk it up to newbie inexperience, but when I first got my FC last year I shelled out those big bucks for my HKS intake only later realizing that I could have just bought the adaptor for $20. Oh well, learning experience.

Does anyone know where to get a generic APEX-i filter, minus the adaptor? I guess right now I'm just trying to track down an affordable cone filter, since I already have the adaptor piece from my HKS intake.

FD intake kits = twice as many filters. Oh and i've never heard of a generic Apexi filter. All i have seen are kits. They claim the filters are zero-maintenance dry filters...so i suppose you never have to replace them? i have no idea how that works...
