Removing LIM, can't get oil injector off

Hello everyone.

I've recently sourced a coolant leak to the top of my LIM. So I proceeded to remove it; Beginning with the UIM, turbo etc... I've got everything ready to come off except the oil injectors that are located on the LIM itself. What's the trick to get these little buggers off? I think it's a 14mm wrench on the bottom nut, but it feels a little sloppy, as does a 13mm on the top... To be perfectly honest I don't know which one to turn. I have searched but haven't turned anything up... I will be replacing the LIM gasket and O-rings to be sure to take care of this problem.

Thanks in advance

- Wes

I just went through this. You need an open 14 wrench, preferably a cheap one you don't give a crap about. Get a bench grinder (you can get a cheapo one for like $20-30 at Harbor Freight, and you don't have to mount it if you don't have a good work bench) or an angle grinder. Grind it thinner, as in make it more flat so it can fit between the top and bottom parts of the oil injector. It'll take about 10 minutes of repeatedly grinding it down and then testing it.

That should get the wrench on there better. Then I had trouble getting enough leverage, so I cut off the closed end with a cutoff wheel (like a table saw with an angle grinder blade), or you can use a hacksaw (ugh, tedious) or an angle grinder if somebody holds it. Once you get the box end off you can slide a piece of pipe over it for leverage. You may have to cut that to size too.

Actually, I did exactly the same thing (ground a wrench Thinner). You need to be careful and not let the metal get hot while you are grinding or the wrench will lose it's temper. Obviously you will not want to grind more than necessary.

I have a couple of TII Oil injectors laying around, if you want to see how they are assembled I can get you pictures (if my internet doesn't cut out on me).

The easier way is just to clear out anything blocking the oil injector lines (air pump bracket, etc..) and undo them at the OMP. Unbolt the whole LIM with the injectors and lines still attached. Put in on a bench and very carefully use a rubber mallet on a 14mm wrench to break them loose. The top "nut" on the injectors themselves is not a metric or SAE size, so don't bother trying to fit 2 wrenches in there. Only the 14mm bottom matters.

This is exactly how I did it on the teardown of a motor I'm building up. The injectors were seized in place and there was no safe way to break them loose with the LIM bolted on the block.

I used a crescent wrench and a small hammer to tap it and break it loose.

Note that if you intend to reinstall the nozzles, Mazda specifically advises against this in the FSM.

Hey guys,

I successfully removed the LIM. I attempted to remove it by grinding down a 14mm wrench but it proved to be a very awkward method. I ended up disconnecting the oil lines from the OMP and wiggled it off with great ease.

Thanks again for the advice!

yeah I had the motor on an engine stand when I used the ground-down 14mm so that makes it easier.
