Removing emissions:Pros/Cons
I just bought a 1987 turboII, it just passed smog...i am new to the forum, and i have heard talk about removing emissions, which is something i really wanna do, but i was wondering what downsides there are to removing emissions, and if i can (due to living in California?). I would also like to know if the positives will out-weigh the negatives. Thanks for the help!
BTW: Will i need to buy anything special to do this? or is it just removing? (Sorry i have very little knowledge of emissions).

Emissions removal isn't nearly as exiting as you think. There are only very small power gains (unless the cat's clogged) and a little weight loss.
And from what I've heard, if you even looks sideways at your emission controls in California you'll fail. I'd check that out carefully before you start ripping bits off your car.

The main reason for removing all of it is to clean up the engine bay and to simplify your whole system a lot. Less parts in a system generally means less chances of something going wrong.
You live in California? Don't even think about removing your emissions if you are ever going to have to get your car tested again!
To shoot flames all you need to do is remove the catalytic convertors and also install an air intake and filter. Remember to save the catalytic convertors and stock exhaust system so when your gay California emissions check rolls around you can swap them back on to pass!!

Negatives: In CA you could get a big fine, your car will stink to high heaven (the exhaust any way).
Positives: Cleans up the engine bay quite a bit. Made my car MUCH easier to work on (especially the turbo). A little weight loss, and a little power. You can get a good bump in power if you use a straight pipe to replace the main cat and a down pipe to replace the precat. I think my '87 TII was faster than the '89 I just bought. The only "mod" on my '87 was the downpipe and main cat pipe + all emissions removal.

Yeah, the main reason i wanna remove it is because there is a lot of extra "crap" in my engine bay, and i could remove quite a bit of it and i think the engine would look A LOT better then it currently does....Is there anything i can rip out from under the hood without messing with emissions? I still have the stock air box which is getting pulled very soon.

Leave the emissions equipment alone until you have more knowledge and can properly judge the pros, cons and consequences for yourself.
This is like the classical post "What are the 5th and 6th ports....Oh, and how do I wire them open?"...
