removing cats, do or don't?

I was thinking about removing the cats on my automaical 88 gxl, Should i only remove the precats? or both? or should i leave well enough alone, I have access to a pipe bender, welder, and probally anything else except a cnc shop (that would kick if i did though). im starting with the free mods to the car first, then as money builds up, a tranny swap is commin.
thanks for all the help!

remove if your location have no emissions testing, otherwise keep it on (unless you like doing cat swaps every 2 years for testing)

Please remember that if you remove your cats, you may not have enough exhaust backpressure to open your 5th/6th ports. Normally the stock catback is sufficient, but sometimes it is not. You will also have to properly plumb the split air pipe into your cat replacement pipe.

I have RB headers, presilencer, 2.5" pipe to a straight-thru muffler, and my aux. ports open fine. I had the welder put the split air pipe immediately after the header collected, before the presilencer. Just food for thought.

Sorry for being retarded, but what does a presilencer do?

I think it's also called a resonator, it cuts down on the sound. http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda2.htm

Why don`t you get a high flow cats.
I think Magna Flow sells them for 80 bucks, you`ll get to pass the smog and you get the power you want.

Why would anyone want to do something like that???

Are FCs really that loud if you pull the cats off?

Ah, so you guys are talking about pulling the mufflers off the back as well then? If that's the case, would a silencer give you enough backpreasure for the port opening?

No. We're not talking about pulling the mufflers off the back. Even just straight through exhaust w/o presilencer is damn loud. With presilencer, the exhaust is toned down a bit, making it bareable for you and your neighbors

put a straight pipe if you want it loud and cheap, or high flow cats and some nice mufflers for a deeper sound.

I read on this forum few weeks ago that pre-silencers are not good for rotaries.

if racing beat designs it, I'm assuming it's good enough for my car. I don't need cats, I'm in Florida. No emissions testing, but we also have Bush as governor, I'm not sure if it's a fair trade off.

Anyways, with my setup, I'd say it's no louder than many of the riced-out civics with coffee can mufflers that I see.

That's another nice idea. The whole thing would probably not be much more expensive (at least for just the cat) and you don't need to worry about the port thing.

I put RB pre silencer and down pipe on my NA with RB mufflers. Wow what a difference, best money I have spent. I also have a street ported engine however. Never put headers on it but should.
I cant imagine a pre silencer being bad, its just a pipe within a pipe, the inner one is straight thru with a million holes around it with fiberglass wraped around that and the outer case over the whole thing. If you look in one end its a straight thru shot with no obstructions.

Does it actually smell bad? My Accord reaks when I have the windows down and it pisses me off. Do high-flow cats still give the same performance benefits and allow the the ports to open without assistance as well?

Basically you get something long and narrow like a bit of pipe or a bigass screwdriver and put it down the hole into the cat and start pounding it with a hammer.

As for high-flow cats, you can't use just any old high flow cat, because the extra hot rotary exhaust will destroy it pretty quickly. Bonez makes one for the rotary application, rx.7com sells them.

Lol so you just basically beat a hole through it? Isnt there some kind of chemical or something in there thats harmful?
