Reliability Mods

I just bought a '90 GTU and I love the car, but I will not lie I want to street race the crap out of it. However, this is also my daily driver. What mods/repairs should I do to the car before I can safely do this without risking my engine or other problems. Also, I have heard you guys mention many times, reliability mods. What are some of these?

Thanks

Make sure your engine is in top condition. Change all fluids, clean things up, make sure you're getting proper compression, etc. That, above all else, is most important.

Reliability mods mean beefing up the basics. Do a search for details on what follows, or look at some FC FAQs (they're everywhere.)

- grounding mods

- hi-flow air filter (you'll get a few more hp out of the engine and it will be the last air filter you'll buy for the car - you can clean it) Add a cold air line to that.

- better plug wires

- TB (throttle body) mod

- use Red's Water Wetter in your coolant

- check *all* circuit boards for broken solder points

- check the shift lever bushings - they tend to shred and are easy to replace

- use fuel injector cleaner or Marvel Mystery Oil with every other fill up

- use Redline synthetics in the tranny and diff

- do the ATF trick

- consider disabling the EGR (especially if you're gonna race)

Poke around with the Search for more ideas.

Silicone vacuum lines and zip ties. Most of the rubber vacuum lines are probably as hard as rock by now. This makes them crack easily. Or they might not even seal well against the nipples (don't giggle kids ). Some might consider this too "showy" of a mod. I don't. Most of the important lines are out of sight. Go out of your way to change them out when you can at your leisure. It beats trying to fix this at night with a flashlight dealing with a hot engine. Don't ask. While on this subject, you should replace all lines that you can. Brake lines, water hoses, oil lines, and fuel lines. Cheap rubber doesn't age well. I had an oil cooler line blow out on me. I was luck and caught it right away. When I looked at the inside of this line, it was all crackly (is that a word?). It's worth the time and effort. Assume your car was neglected and prepare for the worst by taking care of it accordingly. When you wind up not having any problems from lack of maintenance it'll all be worth it.
Get a new fuel filter. This seems to usually be forgotten about. Good luck.

Almost forgot! Something else you can do that's kinda similar to the ATF trick but a lot quicker to do.

I was very cautious about this (spraying carb cleaner into a vac line) but since I did it almost two weeks ago I now swear by it.
