Redone wiring

Okay lets say you had the chance to take your 7 into your school where your taking a class for automotive service and you could do anything electrical and or tune up related.

Now you decided that the wiring for your engine and ecu are too cluttered and just a horrendous mess, and start to contemplate re wiring the whole engine bay.

So now my question is how hard would this be, with just maintaining the stock connectors and eliminating every wire that isn't needed. And would it be possible with 3 hours a day with 5 days a week for a month and a half or so.

Has anybody even done this or am I just having another stupid pipe dream of an idea.

I rewired my engine. It didn't take that long. You need a lot of wire and a label machine will help, or a label book thing. you will also need a lot of butt connectors and you may as well go all the way and replace the connectors in the car as well.

This sorta thing is mostly done when you go standalone because there are so many wires that you can remove/and or don't need.

I think it took more time to get the wiring harness out and strip it down to bare wire than to make the new harness.

Good so I'm not the only one. Do you have any hints or instructions that'll come in handy when you did yours. Also what did you do specifically, cut out all the wires and replace them with new connectors in the pigtails or did you just cut the wires a few inches from the pigtail and splice the new wires from there.

I'm also assuming you used different colors for all the wires, how many different colors did you need. Maybe if you can get a rough list of supplies you used so I can get all my stuff ready now and then in 2 weeks or whenever I can get started I'll have it all.

It sounds like you still kept the stock ecu then right? Did you rewire anything on that end or just the engine harness itself

the main engine harness wouldnt be hard...now if you were going to replace the driver side harness that goes under the dash and wraps around the engine bay then i think you're way over your head.

I'd be scared to work on the car afterwards...unless you can duplicate every single wire color combination the stock wiring already uses?
It'll be a nightmare, cause the FSM is basically useless after that!

Good point, but at the same time, with a good set of chemical resistant laser printer labels, you could make it EASIER to work on. You wouldn't even need to refer to the FSM for wire functions.

I used to buy labels for my job that you printed in the laser printer... They were heat and smudge resistant... Once printed, the only thing that made them un-stick or smudge was brake/ATF fluids.... Oh.. and Kerosene...

anyways... just an idea. Hehe

PS. You always have the best Avatars..... Mmmmmm.....

i have done the drivers side harness for lts ect i stlit it and run mine down the boxings under the front wings. things like whippers gear box loom runs all the way round the car when you can just make a new hole through the bulk head. i would try and use the stock wires if you get a tiny allen key or drill bit you can release the wires rom the plugs. do them 1 at a time so no confushion and just solder any joins and heat sleve. you can also put enging main relay + fuel pump relay behind the dash makes the bay so much cleaner.
