Redline cut-out

In 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear between 6700 and 8000 rpm my engine cuts out a bit (86 na). It ranges from a slight hesitation to momentary (less than a second) complete loss of power. What might cause this? Is there a rev limiter that cuts gas supply that could be malfunctioning? ECU farts or something? Otherwise my motor runs great.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Eric

Thanks for the ideas. BTW, I didn't know there was a rev limiter. What RPM is it set at ('86 NA). How does it work (does it cut the spark? the fuel?)?

Can clogged cats caust that? It's transient, so it ocurrs say, depending on the gear, at like 7000-7200 rpm and then goes away from 7200-7500 rpm (I usually shift at 7500-7600 rpm).

I think I have it figured out. The hesitation around 7k RPM has gone away after adjusting my timing back to TDC (it was set at 5 deg BTDC at idle). The major cut-out at 7800 rpm is still there, I think it's the rev limiter. I guess 5 deg BTDC is a bit too much even for an na, esp on 87 octane pump gas.
