Redline Buzzer Question

Of course, we all know there is this buzzer that occurs as we approach redline. My question is when is it suppose to come on? Also, what would cause it to fluctuate?

I've got an s4 na, and it seems to come on at different points, generally around 5500, or 6500. I've had it come on even earlier a couple times.

Obviously, I don't want to damage my motor, or suffer the inevitable sound any longer than I need to.

Any help is always appreciated!

Justin

around 6,800rpm indicated on the tachometer. You could be hearing a buzzer alert for something besides the rev...

Or low oil...or low coolant....could be beeping because of it being sloshed during acceleration. The buzzer sounds BEFORE the light is illuminated. Check all your fluid levels!

I'm very **** about fluid levels, and check them every time i fill up. Oil is perfect, coolant is perfect.

I will double check with brake fluid although. They always seemed perfect though and performed quite well. When I first picked up the car the 'stop' light would come on the idiot cluster, but i replaced the pads and rotors all around and it went away.

I had a couple bubbles in the coolant when i did a flush, and heard the the buzzer for that, but the idiot light also came on. No idiot lights come on when the shift buzzer comes on.

Which reminds me, a few people mentioned shift lights, did all the FC's have them?

I'm not aware of any shift lights in stock form..... If you're hearing the buzzer that far below redline, it's either some other issue, or a modification.

If you flushed your cooling system recently, expect to see a lot of bubbles as air incorporated during the flushing procedure finds its way out..... BTW, draining your coolant / refilling will very likely result in the "low coolant" light illuminating eventually, unless you were lucky or very precise when adding coolant.

I actually have a shift light in stock form on my 87 gtu. Does it work? No, I need to replace all the fuses in the box on the inside. But there is one there.

Yes, s5's have a redline buzzer (also activated by "add coolant" warning). It's possible that it's inoperational or someone has desoldered it from the instrument cluster circuit board (as I have done).

my 88 vert has a shift light and my shift buzzer comes on around 6k but i usually have music on and dont care. i suggest really good kenwood speakers should solve your issue as long as you have all you fluids in check which sounds like you do.

All usdm fc's should have a shift light. My buddies 86 base model, my friends old 88 se and my 88gxl, along with my brothers s5 90 gxl and my friends old s4 vert and my buddies s5 vert aling with my friends 87 tii and my other friends 88 tii and my buddies s5 tii all have shift lights not trying to soubd rude or anything, just letting u kno I've been inside every usdm model fc and they all have factory shift lights. Most of them however stopped working because of bad solder joints, but they should come on between 2650-2900rpm for optimum mpg just one of those useless peices of info that I know. Forgive me for being an fc nerd lol

The video lags behind the audio. That's youtube for you. Still, I'm glad I never had to put up with that annoying light. Now if you could program it for a higher rpm, that might actually be helpful.....

I heard glass breaking at 0:14. You shouldn't drink and drive. heh heh.

That is what I did on my Haltech equipped S4. I took the shift light output and hooked it up to the shift up light on the factory instrument cluster. Didn't really need it but it was just a couple wires so I figured why not.

From the factory, the light is supposed to tell you to shift for best fuel economy.

I thought the s4's were 86-88, and the s5's were 89-92???

Jar2 >> Yes they are 86-88 and 89-91/2 [No cars produced for 92, just left over inventory]

rx7freak13v >> I don't remember if the S5 coupe I drove a while back had a shift light but my 90' vert does not and my 91' Coupe A Package does not. [The 91' I just went out to the garage to double check.]
Also [of course] none of the automatics have it.

Oh and my buzzer comes on right around 6500RPM on my 87' Base. [Manual with automatic - shift light free - gauge cluster]

my buzzer comes on at the same spot that his did in that video. I'm going to go use a flash light and see if there is a shift light there, that just doesn't come on for some reason, or maybe i've just never noticed it...which is doubtful

IIRC only s4's had a shift light, I've never seen a s5 cluster with a shift light...
