Recharging A/C
Mine blows, but not cold, So i'm thinkin I need to recharge it. It takes R-12 or R-12A refirgerant right? Also is this a job i could do myself, or a job I should have a shop do? Oh yeah, make this an "it's summer, and it's hot, how do i fix my A/C" thread.
Please help me out here, Thanks.

you cannot recharge an R-12 system. It is illegal to do or even obtain or handle without a license. You're better off doing a R-134 changeover. Lots cheaper too.

to put R-12 back into the system... you have to take it to someone licensed to do it. And in that case you'll be spending close to $30 per bottle vs spending around $6 per bottle of R-134. R-12 is something that you CANNOT do yourself without license or face the penalty of up to 5years in prison and $5000 fine per offense

Hey Folks, R-12 not 12a is not illegal!!!!! and yes you do have to have a liscense to BUY it. Quite often, the seal behind the clutch on the input shaft will develop a leak if the compressor isn't run to keep the seal oiled. This is the biggest reason that they run the a/c in the winter time these days when you turn the defroster on.
The best thing is to call a shop that does this "for a living" and get a price quote from them. And yes the "best way" to do this is to let them do it simply because the system use a very specific amount of refrigerant, and the only way to know how much you need, is to remove it, weigh it, and put the additional amount needed back in. Unfortunately, a reclaimer for this runs as little as several hundred to several thousand dollars. Or if you know someone that does it, and has access to these tools, They might do it for a nominal cost. I'm doing a line repair on my daughters care preping it for Tuscon. The shop quoted me a price of very near $500 for what will cost me 150 or less--my own personal stash.

They don't need to weigh it at all.On the driver side of all rx-7's theres a sticker that states what the proper charge.I would never convert to r-134.First of all it wears out your system faster and its less effective in cooling.I would put 12a in it after proper evac of the system.

You can get R-12A on ebay, do a search there for "frosty-freeze", that's where I got mine.
Also, check your local flea markets this weekend, all of them around here have people that will recharge your system for about $25. You might consider adding a can of the 'stop leak' stuff while your at it, it worked great for me.
