Rebuilding engine: How hard is it and can a newbie do it?

I was just wondering. I don't know to much about the RX7's....but do you think if I bought the video and did alot of reading that I could rebuild this engine by myself? Also is rebuilding the engine yourself worth it? Are the tools used to rebuild it expensive? Actually come to think of it my friend Macabre who is also on this board is wanting to rebuild his. I'm thinking that if me and him get together we may both pull it off....we could split the cost on tools and learn from each other. He has a 1990 Red RX7 and I have a 1990 Red Turbo II RX7. Anyway please post your opinions or your experiences in rebuilding engines. Thanks in advance.

If I did it anyone can. I did a 82rx for the first one using a Haynes manual. I don't think there are any special tools required. there is one very large nut holding the flywheel on. A 2/316 three quarter drive socket will fit just fine. I broke a sears craftsman half inch drive on this puppy twice. Really need a electric impact gun for this but I'm still cheap and just last week still used the three quarter breakover with a three foot cheater bar, after heating the nut to loosen the crud. You have to make something to hold the flywheel while doing this. I use a ten fool long piece of u shaped angle iron off a boat trailer that I drilled holes in to bolt it to the flywheel bolt holes. Ten feet gives you a lot of leverage. You need a torque wrench for assy. You need to visit the Mazdatrix.com site to get an idea of prices for parts. Have you won the lottery yet? You'll need to . Instead of the Haynes manual you should download the 88 factory manual at http://www.iluvmyrx7.com. At least download the chapters on rebuilding. The www.fc3s.org has a on going rebuild project. You'll need the obvious, engine crane, some jack stands or ramps.I did it without a video or ever having seen one apart, but if I'd known about a video I would have bought one. If you have a digital camera, I'd take a lit of photos so you'll know where all those vac hose go and how things looked originaly.

I bought the video and also the factory shop manual and i think you can do it with the guidance of both tools. I watch the video whenever i can. It looks pretty simple. I will definitely tackle this job with the help of AE TURBO and another friend with a TII. After i learn how to build motor i will donate my time to build other rotaries so i can help others get their car running!...I know how it feels when a motor fails!=(

GOOD LUCK!..Let me know if you run into problems so i know what i will run into!..

HAILERS,
Thanks for the reply. I noticed that you are in Forth Worth Texas....well I live in Dallas and my Rx7 is in Fort Worth as we speak. I'm probally going to get it towed here next week back to Dallas. I would love to have your opinion on the car. I started to think about it and I don't think I will be able to rebuild the engine myself. I have almost no experience with cars. What I am going to do is buy a engine from corksport.com and then in my spare time rebuild the bad engine. I wish I knew more about cars and what not. I am so freaking eager to get this car running that its driving me nuts! Now I have to figure out a way to come up with the money for the engine!
