Rebuilding 86 13B Engine Question.

Please see picture.

I sent the irons out to be resurfaced. Should I scuff the finish with my Diamond Lap in a Cross hatch pattern or go with the existing finish?

Also .003" was taken off of each face of the irons, the engine will now be .012" shorter, is this a problem? Should I lap the thrust bearing and remove .012" from it?

Thanks.

pardon the ignorance, but why wouldn't you just adjust it with another spec of end spacer? i never heard of lapping a bearing.

Thanks for the reply, ( Pardon my ignorance) being a piston engine minded builder the thrust bearing normally is just a flat plate. Lapping .012" off of the back of it isn't a big deal.

From your comments I realize that the rotary uses a spacer or sleeve, now in my case will be too thick. I can easily lapp .012" off of the spacer to bring it into spec.

Thanks. I see now where the thrust is being adjusted.

leave the surface alone

you also don't need to lap any bearing, the thrust play will not be affected.

Even then wouldn't you want a bigger spacer to remove endplay? By using a bigger spacer you will return the length that you lost and the eccentric shaft hasn't lost any length.

I think you are right I will need a larger spacer to take up the slack that has been removed from the Irons.

Thanks for the comments, I am just learning this Rotary engine, been working on Piston engines way to long. I am doing this for my son, he has a first Gen GSL SE and I have a spare 86 engine. That engine is the one I am rebuilding, I have purchased everthing to MegSquirt it too. Never done MegSquirt to a rotary, but a piston yes.

Here are a few pictures of the first Rotor in the housing. I sent the housing out to Goopy Performance in New York, Johnathan is great to deal with. Turn around on the housings was about 2 weeks to Canada and Back. I am in no hurry.

The Irons were done locally. The machinist said that the housing was out .003" from
Parallel and was corrected on the front face. ( Oil pump face ) Most likely this was an allowable tollerance from the factory.

Thanks again for the comments and setting me straight on the thrust spacer.
