Smile Rebuilding.

For the last few weeks Ive been researching every option I have when it comes to my rebuild. I either spend 3k getting it rebuild outta state (its 3k after shipping), I spend at least 3k at mazda, or I spend a tad under 3 and do it myself. The last option seems more reasonable because I can replace my housings, flywheel, clutch, and get my NEW housings ported for less than the cost of buying it somewhere else and not getting what I want.

Before taking on this project though Id like to know the things I should look out for. What kind of special tools will I need, and what parts of the rebuilding process are difficult and would require more than one person.

Im not a complete noob when it comes to rotaries, and I have the time to do this project. Im a careful planner and from what Ive read it seems like its something any skilled, careful person can do.

Also, Im buying my rebuild kit from Atkins, have any of you dealt with them before? And what company makes a good lightened, streetable flywheel.

Thanks in advance

i actually saw a few mazdaspeed flywheels on ebay for the 7.
and i also bought my MASTER kit from Atkins..
one thing tho, find out if your supposed to get your oil seal springs for me..
i didnt get any, had to reuse mine.
anyways, i did my own rebuild and port.
and its running good so far, i've been driving it to work and back this week.
i also installed the Fiero E-fan.. which is awesome.
its not hard, just gotta be thorough.
i SERIOUSLY doubt you'd spend 3k on rebuilding it.
..unless you buy new housings.
so far, i've INVESTED about 1300 total in my 7.. and thats not just the engine. i've replaced pretty much anything needing replacement..
any and all fluids, slave/master cylinder for clutch, master cyl for the brakes.
new pads, new break lines. new oil cooler lines.
(rebuild kit came out to about 1k).
point being. if your car is running right now. chances are you just need an overhaul kit.. not the MASTER kit. i had stuck seals and a blown coolant seal soo..
i went ahead and bought the master.

You will save a lot of money if you have the right tools and knowledge to rebuld it yourself

I got blown coolant seals too, and I overheated the engine badly and a few times when my 20 year old radiator cracked so im pretty sure i need new houseings. 2750 is what im expecting with a master kit, new housings, the flywheel, and porting.

come to think of it i needed an intermediate housing and a new rear rotor.
so i went to the local junkyard and picked up a new iron and rotor for about $50..
i kept all the seals and such on the rotor and housing.. never hurts to have extra parts ya know.
i cant argue with new products.. i mean who can!?? lol
but if your on a budget (like i was) used parts arent bad!
aslong as they are in spec..
i'm planning to abuse the engine once its broken in (drifting, autoX)
i feel MUCH more comfortable knowing that it'll hold up during those events because i know how it was put together.. and what parts were used..
and EVEN then, if something were too happen i'd have a hunch.. since i DID rebuild it.
plus you get experience points!
and an extra life if it lasts 200k like they are supposed to last.. err NA anyways lol.
tommorrow i'm going to go back to the local yard and pick up a volvo turbo..
and see how that holds up on my FC..
Volvo turboed boosted 160hp, and 215 lb torque..
so its gotta help my FC.. atleast to hit 160hp..
ANYWAYS, OFF subject.. its purely personal preference.. some will say, buy new stuff and you'll have a NEW engine.. problem is.. what if something goes wrong.. all that money you paid for the new stuff will be down the drain if you are boosting anyways.

what DO you have anyways? s4/s5? NA/Tii???

s4 N/A.. I wouldnt attempt to rebuild a turbo right now. Experience was a big plus when I was deliberating too. I havent taken my car to a mechanic for ANYTHING since I first bought it, no need to break that now.
