To rebuild or not to rebuild? :dunno:

So here is the scoop. I have an 87 TII with a blown coolant seal. i have been looking at my options and i am still unsure of what to do. I can get a used engine for about $1k, or have it rebuilt for $2k or rebuild myself. I guess i am just wondering if it would be cost effective to rebuild myself. I have space and a engine hoist/stand and decent mechanical skills. Just looking for imput from some rotorheads.

thanks in advance.

Do it! To tell you the truth, I am looking forward to rebuilding mine when it finally goes. (HOPEFULLY NOT FOR A LONG LITTLE WHILE!!!!!!!) It's not that hard I've heard, and how better to get to know everything about these little beauties!!!

Thats what i have been leaning towards, but looking through the manual, it seems to require some special tools. Does anyone know the approx. cost or any alternatives? Im sure the mazda tools are hard to come by and/or expensive.

yea the tools are quite expensive...flywheel holder and puller form rb was lik 80 bucks and thats not even getting into the internals..all rx7 parts are expensive. try renting some from a local shop some things like holder and puller dont need special ordering. talk to chris at banzai racing for all what really required and the more technical questions concerning rebuilds etc from a reliable source instead of basically a poll online from us..hope it works out for ya

it is pretty easy as long as you: have tools(including percision measurement tools), have intermediate mech skills, have a FSM and you take your TIME.

Mazda trix has a series 6 rebuild DVD made by a rotary guru overseas, it cost about a 100$ but is very detailed and gives you some good tips that the FSM leaves out. Plus the producers of the DVD send you a bad *** rotary break down poster and schematic.
