Well there is this something called an AWS (Accelerated Warm-up System) that mazda put on our vehicles. Its also referred to the "3k Warm-up/start-up." I have no idea why the car would want to bring it all the way to redline but, you can remove the AWS with either the rtek7 ( http://www.pocketlogger.com/index.php?pid=rtek7feat ) and get some other goodies along with it (FCD) or you can just disconnect it. (http://2ndgenrx7.freeservers.com/cgi...5/3000rpm.html )
The reason it's there is to warm-up the pre-cat.

Well try disconnecting the AWS, maybe its just whacked up, I don't know how/why but, its worth a shot. Doesn't look like it will take more than 10 min to do. Getting under teh car would take the most time

When you turn the car OFF it jumps up to over 5000 RPM and shuts down? That's really odd...
And you can hear the engine winding up, it's not just the tach being stupid?

yeah, Im no expert on the AWS system, but I would pull it and throw it out anyway.. I know Mazda had reasons for putting all of the crap into our engine bay, but I got rid of it and made my engine a Rotary for Dummies setup
