Rear tower speaker situation on an '88 SE

I am getting very faint sound from the rear tower passenger side speaker (even with the balance set to passenger side rear), and it seems like the issue is the head unit as swapping the driver side rear speaker didn't help. However, I wanted to check that this isn't an issue with the amp (which I've read is supposed to be integrated into the speaker)? I didn't see anything that obviously looked like an amp.

In my shock tower there were actually two connectors: one blue that was connected to the speaker on each side, and one white/clear that was not used

Only the premium sound option RX7 had the amps in the rear tower speakers. The amp in integrated into each speaker. Should be a circuit board looking thing.

Thanks!
I'm guessing it's the little circuit board in this photo?

Since swapping sides didn't seem to do anything, I'm going to guess it's the head unit :/. Any recommendations for head units other than the stock one that will "bolt in?" I don't mind an adapter but don't want to hack up any of the factory wiring.

Very cool, they're actually not that far from where I live. Though I may try cleaning the pots first myself in case that happens to be the fix .
