rear speaker replacement

the rear speakers in my TII are gone (don't know why, previous owner stuff...)

I'd like to get some speakers back there. Nothing fancy or loud. I just want something close to the OEM specs for a decent price.

so, i know nothing about adio equipment and was wondering what, if any, guildines I should follow when buying the speakers. Are they subwoofers back there? should I make sure the speaker is a certain type? Any help and info is appreciated.

Mine came with 4 inch speakers in the strut tower. I cut the speaker surround bracket and put 6.5's and they sound really good.

If you want something that is close to stock you could easily get a pair of speakers for under $50. They are not supposed to be sub woofers. 6.5 inch speakers are what you will be looking for, that is the stock size. there should be two wires back there that plug onto the terminals on the back of speaker. Most speakers come with wires incase you need to re-run the wires, but I doubt that is needed. Don't be suckered into big brands like Kenwood, Alpine, Rockford Fosgate, Sony or anything like that. Lower quality or even knock off brands like Legacy, Rockwood, Kenford or Pyramid are low price and still better than what came in the car stock.

*EDIT*

Those are some on ebay Explosion (a Sony Xplod knock-off) for buy it now 12.95/pair + $16 for shipping. The shipping charge is pure BS, but you still get a pair of speakers that I guarantee will sound better than stock for $29.

I recommend:

www.crutchfield.com

You can put your vehicle make/model/year and they will give you a list of what plugs right in.

Well just about anything you can buy will be better than the stock speakers.

If you really don't care a whole heck of a lot about it, I'd go to www.crutchfield.com as someone above mentioned and pick up some 6 1/2" speakers that aren't too expensive. Pioneer usually has speakers that are good OEM replacements. Not great, but better than the cheap crap for a good price, and crutchfield will give you free speaker adapters for the FC.

I just got a pair of nice 4inch Pionner 100watt two way speakers for $20 bux used for 2 months. I'm looking for 6 1/2 for the rear right now. I recommend Crutchfield because they have very good business. I got my Sony MD deck and CD changer from them.

I have $0 in my front/rear speakers.

Went to a junkyard, and was scrounging through Supras and Celicas and stuff.
Came across some damn good stuff.
Infinity Reference 4.5s for the front (2-pair, gave one pair to a friend)
and some weird looking speakers for the back. not bad though for free.
Try going to a junkyard and looking through ricey cars. You'll be surprised.
Also, most newer cars 98+ have decent stock speakers.

I just went out to best buy and got some 5.25" pioneer speakers. The return policy was good so I figured I'd try them. $50 later, I'm pleased. They're not great, but I just wanted a basic stereo. Thanks for the advice.

I have learned that you get what you pay for.
so from experience the infinity Kappa series sounds great, much better than any pioneer.

www.crutchfield.com sells a 6.5" adapter for your rear speakers to fit in strut towers. They also sell adapters so you don't have to cut any of the OEM wiring.

For front door speakers you might have to buy some additional spacers for the power window to clear.

the adapters crutchfield gives you for the rears are GARBAGE. you can make a better piece from any crafts store and a few simple arts/crafts tools. they use some kind of flexy board that squeaks and distorts under deep bass (which our car lacks anyway). I made my own out of a stiffer piece of board and used some dynamat...done

agreeded, but the series V's don't have the speaker tubs like the S4s, just OEM sealed rear speakers. So you'll probably end up using foam bezzels either way with aftermarket speakers to seal up the speakers since the rear towers aren't sealed (it would be a PITA to try).

Since you wont get any bass from the rear speakers with foam bezzels, the plastic adapters make sense

bump from 2 months ago!

anyways now it's my turn to get some better rear speakers for my 91 coupe. I went to Circuit City to listen to the speakers they have available, and out of their selections, the 6.5" Infinity Reference speakers sound the best, clear sound throughout the whole sound range, plus a decent bass.

my question is, for the asking price of these Infinity References ($99), can anyone recommend something that they consider to be superior speakers for the price??

instead go to onlinecarstereo.com

its cheaper and theres 10x the selection
personally i have pioneer 3 ways, cheap and they sound good, heres the references for $70
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=13340

This is pretty much what I did for my car...

I made a couple of adapter rings and installed 6-1/2" Boston Acoustics, really helped to fill out the rear sound.

As for the front, I needed to make spacers about 5/8" thick to help the magnet on the 6-1/2" oversize Pioneer speakers clear the window glass (in the down position).

I did add some other speakers as well: 1" pure carbon dome tweeters on the dash and 4" mids in the dash.

Next up: a 10" sub in the spare tire well to take advantage of the hatch glass (like a loaded horn), for some bottom end punch!
