Rear Speaker Question..

I was taking the speakers out of my 88 Turbo2, and they were way different than the ones in my GXL. The rear speakers in the turbo were in their own little black cylinder, that appeared to have an amp built in. It has a Mazda part number , so I assume that this is what they are supposed to be stock? The ones in my GXL are just speakers with a spade connector on them. It very possible the asshat that was the previous owner of my GXL did this, as he was quite dumb..but I was just wondering. IS the black speaker tube stock?

My '86 GXL had the amps stock. I just replaced the top plates (kept the amps) so they have Pioneer 6 1/2 's

You can see the wiring for the different stereo options in the FSM.
My 87 GXL had seperate amps. My 91 does not.

I have an 89 GTU and it had factory 4" or 4-1/4" speakers
in the back. I had already bought a set of 6-1/2 Infinity
to replace then with. When I opened up the cover and found
this little **** hole speaker. They have this aluminum adapter that screwed to the out housing then the little
speaker was screwed to the adapter. I removed the adapter
but then the whole was to big for the 6-1/2" speakers.
So I put the adapter back and modified the adapter. I took
a jigsaw and cut multiple cuts from center to the outer
of the adapter, while it is mounted in the whole. When
I was done I had what looked like about 12 aluminum fingers
reaching to where the speaker would go. I then removed
the adapter and put it in a vise and bent each finger, once
down then 2nd about 1/3 of the way down I bent then
in toward the whole to form little ledge. This allowed me to
drop the 6-1/2 mounting ring that came with my speaker,
onto this ledge. I had to again bend the remaining part of
the aluminum finger down to allow the magnet of the speaker to drop in. I then alined the 6-1/2 mounting ring
into the whole and marked the screw holes on wich fingers
would line up the best, and predrilled holes. I was concerned with vibrations
so put a bead of silicon on the 6-1/2 mounting ring and
alined it with the screw holes. I put the screws in and let
it dry and the mounted the speakers to the new ring.

The reason I had to do this bending is because I neeeded extra clearance for the Infinity tweeter that stands
about an inch higher than the face of the speaker. So the speaker
had to drop deeper so I didn't have to cut out my Mazda Factory
grills that are part of the interior. So if any looks inside the
back window it appears all stock.

heh, I just have 6x9 speaker boxes in the back of the hatch. I removed everything in the speaker tube, including the tube, and just put the two stock grills back on. So it looks totally stock in there, but there's nothing there.

With the speaker boxes in the back, I'll be able to VERY easily remove them come AutoX days

With an aftermarket head unit, I don't think you will need to bother with those speakers man. It's kinda along the lines of what we were talking about with my Fords, with the external amps. They're there to provide what the factory head unit can't. Most aftermarket head units will make up for that. That being part of the reason those amps were were talking about get bypassed when you take out the factory units.

More importantly, hooking up an aftermarket headunit up to the stock amps can destroy them, as they are not meant for that much power input. Just something I've heard, I think from Icemark.
