Digging up an OLD thread hoping someone can help....
Once the assembly is off the car, hth do you remove the top nut if the piston rod just rotates with it?
I've tried it on the car with shock compressed and without, off the car with the spring compressed and without.
FSM says to loosen prior to spring compression, Haynes says after. Neither is working for me.
Thanks,
~j

and the spring should most DEF compressed, and the assembly should most DEF be off the vehicle!!
ive seen ppl break theyre jaw doing this with a uncompressed spring, and heard of ppl dying.
and i can only imagine what could happen trying this on the car

It might help to break the top nut if you go after it with the spring uncompressed first. I actually seem to recall there isn't a lot of spring compression with the strut out and extended - I'm pretty sure when I still had the factory springs on it that I undid the nut without compressing the spring, and by the time it was unthreaded, there was almost no tension left on the spring, although you'll still need to compress it to put it back together. When I undid it without compressing, I finished it with the spring under my foot on the lawn to keep it put. There was a small amount of tension on the spring still, but the top keeper and the strut did not go shooting away. If you're going to put the factory spring back on though, you might as well compress it first to be safe.
