Rear End Disassembly? (& LSD question)

I have an FC rear end sitting on my workbench. I think it came from an '86 but I have had it so long I don't remember anything about it.

This morning I decided to crack it open to take a look at its condition and to see if it is an LSD.

I have all the bolts out that connect the iron cone housing to the aluminum bull horn housing and I have pulled the output shafts from each side. Is there anything else holding it together? I have tried for 20 minutes to break it apart with no success. Any tips on how to get them separated?

I know once I see the internals how to tell if it is an LSD but I remember reading somewhere that after pulling the output shafts you could look through it and tell if it is an LSD rear end. One of them (LSD / Open) has a large round bar running across the opening between the output shafts and the other one does not. This one does have the bar visible, does that mean it IS or IS NOT an LSD rear end?

Thanks.

Can't you just stick the output shafts back in and hold both of them and see if they try to turn together or does one spin and the other doesn't? That is how I checked a used one I bought.

I think you have to use a dead blow hammer and seperate the two housings. It is pretty tight.

From what I have read if an LSD is worn out it will act like an open type rear end. And if this is an LSD I will want to rebuild the cltuch pack while I have it open.

I haved tried a deadblow hammer but I have not had any luck with it. The two housings seems to be stuck together with some gasket material. I will see if I can get a something between them to break the seal.

If you have the output yokes out then it should come right apart. I use a gasket scraper to drive between parts that are stuck together with sealant. Few good raps with a big rubber mallet also helps.
