Rear Brake Calipers (S4, Base)
Rear Brake Calipers (S4, Base)
I got my hands on a pair of rear calipers, but they suffer from the same problem that the ones on my car do. The mechanical linkage for the e-brake is almost frozen. I can turn one with my hand, and the other with a wrench. Needless to say, the spring is ineffective on both.
Are these rebuildable? They don't look like it because of the screw that is just rusted and missing half of itself.
Here are the pistons:

If it were me, I would only use it if I could get it apart. If everything comes apart, then sandblast and re-build it. Looks pretty beat up though, and might need new pistons as well. All depends how much work/$ you want to use to get those working again. It would be a lot easier to start w/a better base of a caliper though. Make sure you replace the bleeder screws though, looking pretty fugly there...later

Yea, both my top screws are fine, it's the bottom 2 that are missing half of themselves. I can unscrew the top ones completely out and screw them back in by hand so maybe this will still work? I just need to learn how to hone cylinders. The top of the piston shouldn't really matter at all should it? If im gonna be using stock replacement pads.
I suppose I could ground them down a bit to make them smooth.

I checked into remanufactured rear calipers for the S4 base, and they cost $80 a piece, plus another $50 or so for core charge. I can't afford $160 for rear calipers right now.

Umm, why? You shoulden't have too. It's the rubber seal that seals the two together. Honeing it woulden't help anything, it'll just make the hole bigger, and the piston size won't change...
