REALLY poor gas mileage...
Haha, yes another bad gas mileage thread.
Yes, I did a search but the only people getting gas mileage as bad as mine were TII's. On my last tank of gas I got 14mpg which I didn't think was too bad... Then I filled up my tank last night and calculated that I got 11mpg.
On my 87 SE I remember getting about 18-20mpg and I drove that car harder than I do my 90 GTU since I havn't quite broken in the engine on the GTU.
I have a new fuel filter that I will be installing tomorrow in the shop. I'm gonna switch in the O2 sensor outta my 87 into the 90 since the O2 sensor was good in the 87 before I blew the engine.
*sigh*
Anybody else have any good ideas?
Thanks,
Mason

There is a write up about the TPS in the Archive isn't there? I will have to look that up.

After performing a 60K tuneup, check the following:
intake restrictions
compression
exhaust restrictions
O2 sensor
timing
water thermo sensor
intake air temp sensor
AFM air temp sensor
TPS
internal lubrication (either MOP or premix)
belt driven accessories for rough bearings
Note that if you're doing mostly stop-and-go driving, your mileage is going to be lower than average...

Gutting the cats is the easiest. You just take them down and use a long screw driver to tear about the inside.
Also, just install a new O2 sensor, they're about $15 at any auto parts store and are universal. Since you live in OK i know there is an AutoZone near you, just pick one up there.

Alright thanks ya'll... I guess I can go ahead and buy a new O2 sensor. I'm pretty poor because of all the money I'm spending on gas. :-P
I've already done most of the 60k tune-up and I'm waiting for my next paycheck so I can finish it up.
I can prolly go ahead and gut my cats when I get off work today. How exactly is it gonna affect my car? Noise, power, etc?
It doesn't look like there is a write up about the TPS in the archive like I thought there was. I guess I will have to do a quick search. Anyone have a good link for it?
Thanks again ya'll,
Mason

Well I gutted my cats. It looks like someone already tried to gut them but did a really bad job. I finished gutting them and reassembled the exhaust but screwed something up and now I have an exhaust leak. ****. So I'm waiting for it to cool off so I can fix it. It's loud... hehe...
The O2 sensor was a pain in the *** to get out but I finally got it off and installed the new one.
As soon as I get the exhaust fixed I'm gonna go fill her up with gas so I will be able to figure out if we have fixed the problem by tomorrow evening.
Thanks again,
Mason

1.3L is not that small
jail... prolly not... fine defintately... but how the hell would they know? the police are not going to unbolt the cat to check for internals on the side of the road... and if they do hope the burn the crap out of themselves... now will an inspection place.. they would just use the sniffer and say its failing... now what i have however would get my *** fined .. its just a straight pipe but im going to put on a fake shell around it for when i have to pass inspection.. just visual here

inspection in OK
you are correct. Oklahoma no longer has vehicle inspections. However, i heard in about 3 or 4 years they may start the smog emissions standards implemented by the california state. However, i have been running a 3" downpipe/midpipe from thunder Fabrications, with dual 2.5" inlets on my ride and no cop has even tried to stop me for it. so, i figure unless you get pulled over, and they really want to screw you over (which i suggest you just be as polite as possible, usually that works for me) then you should be okay. Masonrx7, where do you live in oklahoma? i am located in Tulsa.

23/29 miles to the gallon!!! YAH ME. After comming from Glamis. (A desert where you can ride quads and dune buggies) to my home in OC. it was about a total 450 miles there and back. a 4 hour ride 1 way is not fun. but good news is that, not only did i find out how Reliable my rx7 is. but i found it to be good on gas! i spent a total of about 35 dollors for gas.
i only have 143k on my ride. with Custom CAI and no air pump. (My cat is Clog like a **** since my last ecu went out and the new ecu flooded my system)
i recomend changing spark plugs and sparkplugs wires, ground your system, free up the exhaust and intake area, and if you got a lil money dyno tune safc2 your system. trust the fact that running leaner will save miles on the ****.. of course im talking about an n/a system.

I got ticketed last night for illegally modified exhaust. On my first drive out. The cop pulled me over for driving with my fog lights on. I was like "Oh, I'm sorry. I wasn't aware that you couldn't drive with your fog lights on." Then he asked me about my exhaust. "That is the way I bought the car sir. The exhaust is stock." He went looking around my car then took my info back to his car and came back with a verbal warning for driving with my fog lights on and a ticket for illegal exhaust. "Somethings not right with dat der exhaust son. You best be taken it down to Mister Muffler and having them fix it or fix it yourself." So now I have to freaking get new cats to void this damn ticket.
I was completely polite and denied everything. I guess luck is a big part of getting out of a ticket. Pulling me over for driving with my fog lights on is a shitty reason to pull me over.

Both counts sound shady - warning for foglights and ticket for an illegal exhaust when it's factory stock (I know the cats are gutted but it doesn't increase the sound THAT MUCH). Sounds like a cop on an anti-Japanese car crusade.

i would get him for entrapment, seriously.
Ive learned the hard way that cops here in OK dont like any japanese cars, just recently i got pulled over passing through the pikepass gate on i44 for allegedly not having a pikepass...and even though i showed my pikepass to the hi-po he then proceeded to tell me that it did go off. i told him it beeped and everything but he wrote me a warning and everything and then asked me if i had been speeding! what the hell? how does speeding have anything to do with the reason why you pulled me over? all because i have exhaust and my cars bright red and a toyota (for now)...stupid...

Update time...
I took my car down to Mister Muffler to see how much replacement cats would be and they took a look underneath the car and said all I really needed was to replace one of the gaskets.
$10.99 for the gasket and
$20.00 for labor.
I said cool and they took 20 minutes to replace the gasket and now my car is running smooth and quiet.
I went down to the police department and had a cop check out the car and he cleared my ticket. Yes! I'm still catless... haha!
Some of my buddies say its running quieter than before. *shrugs* Well, whatever.
After I get off work I'm gonna run up to the gas station to see how my gas mileage looks.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
Cops... Cops are horrible here in Stillwater. We have soooo many cops. Regular cops, Hi-Po's, OSU cops, and Sherrifs. Its hard to go anywhere and not see at least two cops. Most of the regular cops suck, all the Hi-Po's suck, OSU cops are stupid, but the Sherrifs are cool as hell.
