really how hard is to rebuild?

i have an 89 non-turbo and it puffs oil like no ones business at full throttle at high rpms. someone told me it was a side oil seal? and it seems to be loosing power as well. how hard is it to do a rebuild on my own?

would it be better just to sell it and take the loss, i have no real connection with the car, this oil things has really been getting to me.

They're fun to rebuild if you're moderately mechanically inclined. If you're not, find someone to help, and you'll probably be mechanically inclined afterwards.

i was looking at rebuild kits, and they say 'this kit is for a stock rebuild' i always hear people talking about street port/ bridge port, are there other ways to rebuild it stronger or where i can get more power from the engine?

you dont need the rebuild video...
take it apart, and common sense is enough to put it back....

Street porting is a great way to get more power !
CORRECT me if I'm wrong but you grind your Intake and exhaust holes in your Rotor Housings Larger - obviously leading to a noticable power gain

BUT I wouldnt recommended you do that on your own - IF you dont have practice!

Take a look at my rebuild thread in the archives. Should give you an idea of what's involved.

Regardless of what some other's say, get the video. It goes through the entire process and offers many helpful hints and tips.

Intake ports are in the irons housings (oriented vertically) and exhaust ports are in the rotor housings (oriented horizontally). porting alone with all else stock isnt going to do much, you would need to uncork your exhaust system and intake as well. It also isn't as easy to do correctly as people on this forum think, and is very time consuming for a beginner.

have fun rebuilding

get the video there are maybe three of them outthere...... if you have never built an engine its helpful. common sense will get you in trouble with a rotary..... swapped sideseals, backwards oil control ring springs all kind of lil **** that will mess you up. i have built two .. they are very easy. the common sense comment? :-P ...be realistic ... my first engines i have kept simple no porting.. last but not least rotaryresources.com or rotaryaviation.com sells very nice rebuild kits. there apex seals are pretty stout 700% harder than stock you can detonate the hell out of them.. been there done that

Rebuilding a rotary is about as hard as making a sandwich (humor)

Anyways, its easy if you can follow directions in the FSM and check seals/surfaces with the proper tools.

The only advanced issue I ecountered was adjusting the e-shaft end play.
I could have left it at .008", but I went ahead & cut it back to .003".

there are a few videos but the one i'd recommend is the bruce t. video and rotary aviation sells it. the atkins video is also a good generalized rebuild vid but bruce's vid is more indepth. aaron's thread is also a good reference on rebuilding.

Rebuilding is easy... But putting the engine block back together is a total pain in the *** (at least the first time...)

Compared to that, pulling the engine and dissasembling it (besides the flywheel) is cake. Although I haven't put mine back in yet...

I'd get a video if I was you... reading the FSM over and over again is one thing, having someone show you is another thing.

But if you haven't read the FSM rebuild section over and over again, do it!

I just got my Adkins video last night, I couldn't wait, I ripped into it and threw it into the DVD player.

This is the best $25 you can spend. It is really a good video.
