Re-upholstering seats, anyone know a good place to buy fabric?

Like the title says, I'd like to try a DIY seat restoration. Anyone know of a good place to buy a variety of fabrics suitable for car interiors? So far, all I have come up with is gulffabrics.com.

Exactly what I am looking for, a do it yourself kind of thing. If it can save me a few bucks, and I learn something new along the way, I'm all for it.

I've checked ebay, and they either have re-upholstering "kits" for cars (mostly old classic muscle cars), or some other fabric that I am not sure is suitable for use in a car. Do I necessarily need automotive grade fabric (is there such a thing?) or am I over thinking this?

BTW, I have also found a site were they sell the seat fabric used specifically in Recaro seats, it's rather expensive and the color selection was limited however.

im reupholstering my seats and i just bought some sued for the seat back and the seat its self as for the trim on the seat and the actuall back of the seat its black corduroy(?) just use the stock metal things to hold it down and replace the gromets to attach them and your cherry. Also when you have the fabric off the seat youll notice they are set up for 4/5point harness so i ran mine while putting the seat backtogether.

That's interesting. I don't have a rollcage, or plan for one anytime soon, so the harness thing is not really a factor, but still interesting to know. Where did you buy the materials, and how are they holding up?

To go along the same topic, does anyone know where you can get new foam for the seats?

Okay, modified my search a bit, came up with some refined results. A few resources for where to find fabric: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...ats+upholstery
https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...ats+upholstery

Both threads on this site of course. It seems fieldsfabrics.com could be an excellent source as well.

Still looking for some detailed how-to's, will update if I have any luck.

Leatherseats.com sells replacement leather covers, can probably do other materials if you are interested. They do the fake suede stuff. I did mine last winter. I have some pics of the work if you are interested, the usually auction a pair on EBay every week, they use the pics of my car in the auction.

I reused the same foam. Don't know where you can get replacement foam since it is shaped to the seat, would be a great idea if you could. Of couse if it was a muscle car you could get new foam. Mine was in good shape, I just glued some new foam to the one worn spot I had on the back bolster. Some foam is built into the cover.

Hemmings Old Car magazine also has tons of suppliers for upholstery but typically Japanese cars are not covered if you are looking for OEM.

It probably took about 6 hours per seat for me, taking my time. About 50 hog ring staples to cut off and reapply, lots of pulling and stretching to get it to fit.
