Rattling noise, changes with rpms

86 N/A with MT. 82k miles on it. It recently developed a rattling that becomes noticeable after 3500 rpms and gets worse as engine speed increases. Happens whether the car is moving or parked. (It happened after some speed drifting, pushed the engine to 6500+ a couple times in a row)

My initial thought was tach cable, but from searching for parts online I cannot find a tach cable. Does the s4's have a tach cable? or is there some other obvious thing I should look at.

This hasn't affected any performance at all.

i had a slightly simmiler problem had the clutch ever been replaced before if so look for the rear engine hook to lift it out of the car and see if its loose sometimes the bolt can back its self out remember it treads into the rearend housing and holds the top of the bellhousing on and has a nut on the bellhousing side with the hook acting like a washer i dont know why but thats what did it on mine

the rattling seems to be coming from in dash. It actual reminds me a of loose cable spinning within its sheathing, which is why i thought of a tach cable first.

HEY! I was just going to post this myself. Guys i dont think these are the problems because my car still is completely stock, only 38K miles but it is possible, anywho just last week i started to notice a rattling coming from behind my dash. it starts to sound when i start the car and when the tach revs change the sound either gets louder or quiter. nowadays it is really quite but i can still hear it. when i turn off the car, as the revs drop and the needle falls the sound (kind of like a slight grinding, i'll have to post a video to be more accurate) will come to a stop. Please if anyone knows the fix i would love to hear it.

No it even makes the noise when stationary and changing revs. How do I check the cables?

you dont take it apart just slides out after you undo 4 screws as for the hazadr light situation i dont know how to fix it icemark would definatly know but you habe 4 screws on the bottom on both right and left side of the black piece and 3 towards the guages on the upper inside

Sounds great, I saw the 3 in the upper inside. I will take a look first thing tomorrow morning and hopefully be back with some better news!

Thanks royaltrex7

The glove box? I know mine rattles when the car moves or is at idle. Even try the hood. I know every now and then mine seems to rattle loose a little.

That large line coming off the ACV to the air relief silencer will make a loud grinding sound if leaking or unhooked. It happened to my S5 GXL (RIP) and took me forever to figure out where it was coming from. only happened at rpms > 3500, terrible, terrible noise

I've had a similar problem. Mine sounds like a cable loose behind the gauges. But it seems to be connected to cold weather. Now that it is warming up I don't get the noise anymore. I'll try and post something later tonight about taking apart the gauge cluster, my friend has a factory tech guide book.

I have an update! So I took apart my dash today and am now assuming that the noise is not coming from the cables connecting to the dash, but somewhere behind the dash... (where the wires come from that connect to the dash) I think. I am no mechanic so I really have no idea, I kinda wish is was one of the cables.

Anywho I have video of the noise, hopefully it will be of much help to someone else who can diagnose the problem.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=PdCfofcneTY

PS. Don't mind the revs dropping, its just me engaging the first gear to get a response from low revs. Or the sound like clock seconds ticking, just my cd player on pause.
