Not Rare at all, Most were aluminum from Mazda, I think the only steel ones were aftermarket replacements.

Aluminum is less common then steel, but not too rare. I have one taking up space in my room.

Most of the '7s I find in yards have steel, my old GXL was factory steel, and I have a spare factory steel from a base in my garage.

That's just not true. I've never seen a GXL with an aluminum hood and I've seen plenty. Mine was 100% factory, with the original stickers, bolts sealed with factory paint.

I've never seen a GXL without an aluminum hood... It was a specific feature of the GXL model, and was listed as standard equipment...

I've seen at least 8 different GXL's of friends and at the junkyard. They all had steel hoods from what I could tell.

Well I must be one lucky bastard... Every GXL I've owned or seen had an aluminum hood... Maybe it was optional then? I know I've seen it somewhere that the GXL featured an aluminum hood...

No it wasn't.

Quit making up stuff.

The alum hoods on GXL models were pretty rare, and generally only found on a few 86 and 87 models that had rear seats and a auto tranny (although a few 2 seaters and manual tranny models had alum hoods too, strictly by per chance).

It was in no means a standard feature found on all GXL models.

actually with all the cost cutting on the S5 models it is much more rare to have an alumn hood on a S5 non turbo coupe (except for the GTUs model of course).

The only FCs to feature and aluminum hood factory were the Convertible "weight savings" and the the scooped version of the turbo II. The rest were steel.

No that is not true as well.

The GTUs model also came equipped with an alum hood as a feature.

That does it...

with all the BS answers in this thread and mis-information. This thread is closed.

DO NOT POST IF YOU DON'T KNOW FOR SURE

at least half a dozen posts in this thread are just made up and/or wrong.

If people at least would search. they would see this has been covered before.

The following had alum hoods from the factory:

Most turbo models
all convertible models
all GTUs models (do not confuse that with the GTU- note the small "S")

In addition some 86 and 87 non turbo coupes had alum hoods, generally based on weight (the closer the car was to the magic 2600 weight, the more likely for an alum hood), so you saw them more on auto tranny models and 4 seat models.

Covered and done.

Thread closed.
