CA Ran outta gas, now fuel gauge wont work

I was driving a couple of days ago and my car started to sputter like it was outta gas and i looked at my fuel gauge and it was WAYYYY past empty, i mean i didnt even know gas gauges meter went that low, anyway i got a gas can put a gallon in, drove to the gas station, and put about 6 gallons in.....my fuel gauge still didnt move though so i thought i would just drive it and it would fix itself. Long story short it never did and i ran outta gas today not knowing how much gas i had. So does anyone know a way to fix my fuel gauge problem or is there a part i have to replace??

pull the pump and sender assembly and make sure that it is not stuck/jammed

These symptoms are similar to what happened to my car. The needle was pointing straight down. It was in fact the fuel sender unit that had malfunctioned. Go ahead and check it like Icemark said, and in case you need another one, Mazdatrix has them.
