Rally FC build. Suspension question

I am building a dual role car this winter and have run into a bit of a snag. I was wanting to be able to run a set of coil overs so i could easily adjust settings and height without springs but I cannot find a CO that offers both a raise and lower, most only go down and the highest setting is below stock anyways. So right now I am working with what I have on the car and trying to get my feet dirty.

On my jaunts through the corn fields I have noticed that the washboard type of roads it feels like the suspension is not keeping up with the holes in the road so I get a jarring effect in the cabin and a lose of control of the car mainly lots of oversteer. I have AGXs and a set of stock replacement springs, although not ideal they are easy enough to swap out if needed. I have tried both running a harder setting and the softer setting but they are still getting hot and the problem is not effected no matter the setting. I know that a set of resivoir shocks would help the heat dissipation but I am having trouble finding any info on this.

Does anyone else have any experience with an FC rally car?

replacing the AGXs with bilsteins will help, they're mono-tube and will help with the heat a bit better and have a much larger piston so they'll control a bit better to begin with.

you'll also want to take off the rear sway bar, that'll help a lot.

If you want to get serious you can make your own coilovers:

I built my second (and current) set towards the end of the thread and they're pretty ridiculous:

Holy mother of tube Dia. Now obviously you dont take that WB to rally-x do you lol. I may copy your setup and have them valved for my application as the adjustable collar length looks to be double what mine is, and if i read correctly they have 9in of compression?

I rallycross my subaru

the rx7 is the autocross car.

the rears are 9" ASNs that are modified slightly to not be dual eyelet (took the eyelet off and threaded the existing M12 threads more so they were long enough to go through the top hat) So they're not quite 9" stroke anymore... they're also slightly too long, you probably want 8" ones anyway.

my fronts are 5.8" stroke, but they make them longer:

yeah you have 2 options really.

Custom coil overs or run bilsteins, rear you can buy bolt in, front are inserts and you have to gut the tube.

I also would advise removing the sway bars, at least the rear the front is subject to the debate and how you like the vehicle performing.

I am moving more and more onto dirt because it is new to me and kind of exciting. Again I have pretty much fee roam of a couple of fields out here and they byroads so my experience is just driving around and pushing the car a lil harder each time.

Would you suggest that the car should have a lot of droop in its setup to follow the bumps, or is too much travel a bad thing in your mind. I have removed the rear sways and it makes the car very easy to rotate I did the same thing with my old FC on the street, and removed front on my old quattro 90 and loved that.

Can you point me to a good resource on event information. I am having a hard time coming up with anything in my area. I am in the Sioux Falls region of South Dakota and dont mind a lil drive up too 2 hours one way is fine with me as long as I get to have a good time.

too much droop isn't bad unless the springs fall out of their perches, and you can fix that with tender/helper springs. the problem with adding droop is you're adding damper length so now it can't compress as much (because the body and shaft are both larger). so it's a fine line between bump travel and droop travel.

that being said, I ran short-ish rear struts on my subaru for a few events and didn't really notice when I picked up the rear wheel (and I did). It's not going to add a whole lot of grip if the wheel doesn't have any load on it anyway.

with some quick google searches I found rallycross programs in:
New Underwood, SD
Cambridge, MN
Eldon, IA
Greenwood, NE

all pretty far away... but not horribly far... Nebraska is going to be your best bet:

the first hit on google was also this dirtyimpreza thread, but it looks like dirtyimpreza is currently down so I can't see if it contains anything useful:

Yai hit up DirtyImpreza as well. All the threads are really old which kind of sucks. New Underwood isnt that bad of a drive, I would have to stay the night some where but that is no big deal. Its right outside of rapid city.

Thanks for the help guys

Suspension travel is not a bad thing for this application on this car. It just costs a lot.
