rain snow

k, i've heard that the rx7 is bad in the bad weather but just HOW bad, and how abotu with chains or snow tires, and i plan on putting Goodyear Aquatread 3's on the car, so how will that affect the rain handling,
is the car even drivable in inclement weather?
this is going to be the only car i have to drive, it's not gonna be a secondary driver or anything

and w/ 275HP just how daily drivable will it be?

thx

unfortunately I'm in the same boat as you are being that my 7 is the only car I have to drive in the winter. I've driven mine a few times in some BAAAD **** my advice is this.

1) 80lbs of salt in the back
2) good tires don't have to be studded or chains
3) If there's more than 4" of snow just stay home
4) KEEP YOUR FOOT OUT OF THE GAS!!!

This worked fine for years in my mom's GSL-SE which rotted out to the point of being almost undriveable after 5 winters so thats just my 2¢

well I can break the rear loose on the rain, even with the A/C on.
Note: this is on the stock GXL rims with all season tires, it grips a bit better with wider tires. Also my car has LSD(which has fucked me numerous times, causing spin outs)

what abotu slush... like 2" of slush, cause that's what tends to be appear on the roads here, cause they road crews salt, and the snow melt's to slush... what about snow tires, dedicated for snow in the winter? how will that affect it?

and what abotu rain? handling and stuff

rx7's aren't bad in the rain. it's the person who's driving. living on the wet coast, i drive my car in the rain all the time. i also made it through my first winter in my rx7 unscathed. when driving in poor weather conditions, the one thing to remember is to take it easy. that doesn't mean you can't have a little fun in an empty lot, but when you're on the road take it nice and slow.

if there's a raging blizzard, which for me is like 2" of snow , like VetteKiller said before don't go out unless you really, REALLY need to. like if it's christmas eve and you haven't even started shopping. if you decided to venture out in the snow, definately get a set of 4 snow tires. all seasons just don't cut it in the snow. if your budget doesn't allow it, then a set for the rear should be ok. i think my next set of winters will be the yokohama k2's. my brother has them on his car and they stick like glue. mind you he drives a bmw 325ix so he has the added advantage of full-time all wheel drive.

oh, one more thing. take care of your tires. whether on or off your car. unless of course you have deep pockets and can afford to go through them like erasers.

Hey, MaxRX7, I'd be glad to take that LSD of your hands. I'll trade for my non-lsd differential...

Driving in the rain is no problem, I live in Oregon, and get TONS of rain. Just gotta be careful and not be to throttle happy and make sure your tires are up to par...Snow, well a little bit of snow is possible if you are EXTREMELY careful and have a lot of snow driving experience, but eitherway its not gonna be safe in the snow...rear wheel drive and lot of HP will make it difficult to drive around without wheel spin..even the slightest of inclines will give you problems if you don't have momentum.

well my budget should allow for snow tires by the time there's snow, i plan on keepin the stock rims for the snow tires...

i'm lookin to be gettin an 87 or 88 gxl, droppin in the cosmo 1.3 TT engine imported... gettin exhaust intake, and a body kit, new rims, and my budget should be around 6000 when it's all done

does that sound realistic?

I run the Goodyear Aquatred 3's on my rex, put 'em on last spring so I don't know how they'll do in the snow, but they are excellent in the rain. BTW, its my daily driver and I've driven through a lot of water at times with no hydroplaning.

And I agree with the other guys, 2" or more of snow and you either stay home or find another car to drive if you leave all-weather tires on.

I drove my 88 GXL in all kinds of crap from 6+ inches of snow to slush and it did pretty damn well. I just didn't accelerate that hard and I avoided really steep or curvy roads. My 90 TII is my daily-driver at this point (soon to change) and I am afraid of driving it in shitty weather due to the possible damage and also due to it's power.

Caught the overboost.com article talking about the adjustable coilovers - up high for winter and low for summer.

Thought that was a good idea

i've never actually seen it, but i met a guy who used to race rx7's and he said that you can import an engine for around 950dollars +shipping from japan with twin turbo that'll have around 250 or so HP
and i asked here, and everyone said that he was probably refering to the cosmo 1.3TT engine and that i can probably get corksport to cusom order it for me
do a search for cosmo and see what comes up
