RADIO PROBLEM: Turns on and operates... just no sound!!! help is appreciated

Thanks for taking the time to even open this thread.

I drive an 88 convertible (with the cd/tape/fm of course). The radio comes on, and tunes through all the channels and such, but when I go to turn it up, NOTHING!

also, the cd player portion wont even turn on.

Any help is greatly appreciated... and yes... Ive tried searching.

THANK YOU!

If you come up with a solution let me know. my aftermarket stereo did this about two days ago. i get power, can use all the functions on the radio, but there is no sound to the speakers. Not even static.

Thumbs up

yo, sounds like you have a blown speaker somewhere ! Try to unhook them one at a time behind the radio and see if it come on . if so leave that speaker unhooked because a blown speaker can mean a bad head unit if left hooked up !!! If you have an aftermarket cd player make sure the power antenna\remote wire in not grounding, that will make no sound come out but still function . I am an installer so I have pleanty of experience with power and no sound radios.
your welcome

also if your dimmer wire (orange\orange and white
) is hooked up wrong no sound will come out

Appreciated. Ill look into it. The speakers cut out when I was forced to go through a standing puddle of water. I went slow, but it may have something to do with that.

if the speaker wire shorts out due to water, that could shut it down or make it act like a blown speaker.

That is very common on cars where people have run their own wires and didn't run the wires in the factory channels

Interesting. I have a similiar issue but it's only the right channel (f & r) that has no sound. Used two different head units (neither are stock), they are wired up correctly, all aftermarket wiring went to amp and sub and that has been torn out. The rest of the wiring is stock.

sounds like the "Turn On" output of the stock radio has failed. Probably time to replace the radio unless you are dead set on staying stock.

Buit I would check speaker condition as well, as any speakers that are 20 years old are probably shot and disolving.

now this is my specialty

If you have a Factory deck w/EQ then you have an amp, and its either not getting power or fried.

If your doing a aftermarket, you would need to remove both rear speakers and rewire them and run new wires to the front.

Dont use the Factory amp with an aftermarket deck. it sounds like poo poo.

Check the power with a DMM set to AC Volts. Volts increases with volume, Make sure the speakerwires anr not grounding out. Test with a DMM set to continuity, ground the neg terminal and test each line, if it beeps it either shorting on the cars chassis or the voicecoil is blown inside the speaker.

u have to ground the chassis of the cd player. there should be a spot in the back of it in the center.. if the cd player doest have that ground. when it plays it will shut off or wont a play sound. bcs there wasnt a ground or more likey a weak ground not letting enough juice flow to it.
