stereo wiring (searched, not about wires)
question for the STOCK harness + alpine head unit...
what adapter do i buy? i got 3 different ones (one came with the head unit, the other 2 i bought from circuit city to adapt from the factory radio harness to the alpine unit.)
the alpine wiring looks as if i need to cut the harness, which i dont want to do.
the ones i bought to fit the factory harness and the head unit, the head unit plug is fine, but the one that goes to the factory harness is bizzare, and wouldnt fit in a million years. the factory harness has 2 plugs, with very small pins. the harness i bought has 3 (or 4 dont remember right now) plugs, with giant 1/4" male prongs. It will never fit in a million years...
what do i need to buy? its an s5, so im thinking of telling them its a 91 so i dont get a harness in their "86-89" bracket or something.
anyone fixed this problem in their car? please tell me what i need
thanks
tj

mark, unrelated question...
i have a 2 flasher cpu's, one is an FB# on it and one is an FC#... i know for a fact the left blinker on the FC unit is toast... wondering if i could trade you those 2 cpus and a warning light cluster with a bad clock for a working warning light cluster? im a little poor right now but i have tons of spare parts ill throw in a working turn signal / high beam switch with the headlight **** too... i dont know whats fair, but i needs me a clock that stays on

radio help
i know exactly 100% nothing about stereo wiring stock amps bleh bleh
my problem:
got an alpine head unit
got all the wiring adapters i need
plug everything in, head unit gets power! no sound. antennae doesnt raise when i put the 'tuner (radio)' on...
i thought maybe the stock amps are not giving me sound
so i put wires to a speaker, and jammed the other end of the wires into the harness to the pins with the wires for 'left rear'
nothing at all...
what have i dont wrong? i grounded to the 12mil bolt on the side of the console (by my knee)
its a 1989 gtu

noone has installed an alpine head unit? there has to be a way to do this without butchering the harness i just painstakingly swapped (soldering and heatshrinking EVERY WIRE that comes in the firewall kind of sucks, id like to keep it intact now)

Two things- the adapter you have just MIGHT not be the right one (that's one).
And 2) Make damn sure that bolt you grounded to is actually a good ground. Use a meter, set it to resistance, pick a chassis bolt as far away as the leads will reach (door jamb area comes to mind) with one lead and your 12mm bolt with the other lead. Should be less than about 1 ohm (should be zero, actually)...

even if its not the right one, the 'powered' plug from the factory harness lines up to the adapter harness just right.
im trying to tap into the speakers without the 'speaker' harness plugged into the factory one at all, just wires on the pins to the speaker
ill check the ground tommorrow its 11pm and i have to go waste my life at work in the morning

i had the same problem as you. the factory wiring harness is 4 pieces i think. there is one piece with only one wire going into it. and i had a left over wire from the deck i think it said remote (i dont know why) but i tried everything and finally i put those two together and it worked. i also have an alpine so if yours is like mine with four plugs try that.

Threads merged... why you thought you needed to start another on the same subject is beyond me...
Did you not read the radio wiring information in the FAQ for FC???
And you will need a relay for the power antenna.

replaced powered antenna with non powered one, now the radio doesn't work. I think it turns on because i get a small "thump" sound from the speakers when i push the power button. But nothing else happens. I removed the old powered antenna, relay and all.

Icemark, you hit it dead on. I didn't know it used a chassis ground. I had the dash pulled apart to replace the shifter bushings and boots and had to remove the radio mounting screws to give me some wiggle room. Once I put the screws back in, worked fine.
Egh, I am too used to Domestic radios using a ground lead in the harness.

That also tells me that your aftermarket radio antenna is mounted badly. You probably have rather bad FM reception, and next to nothing for AM reception.
See in worst case the radio will ground through the antenna ground plain. Sice your radio didn't... well sounds like the antenna is not grounded where you mounted it.

just make your own ground on one of the big 14mm bolts underneith the side trim that are next to your right foot in the drivers seat and theres another one next to your left foot in the passengers seat, worked great for me and the other two i have installed in sevens
as fasr as the harness goes, i know you got the wrong harness, they arent too RX keen on things, ask them for the 91+ or 93+ i cant remember which one it said on the package, but you definalty got the S4 one, i just installed my roomates alpine in his 88vert the harness for my 91 vert was different, get the other harness and you will be fine, but you do need to make your own ground
good luck
