Racing Beat header

I have a 1988 base and was looking at buying the RB road/race header. but i saw that there are 2 typs of headers. So I need to know what header to buy the one with the pipe to the the six ports or the the one with out.

If you want to use your 5/6th ports you need the one with the nipple on it. I dont really know the difference between with/ w/o them. Im pretty sure RB sells both headers with and w/o them if not then i think mazdatrix does. Im selling a RB road/race header in pretty good shape for 170 shipped. You will see it in the parts section with a pic. Let me know if your interested.

you need the one with the 5th/6th port tube. (the more expensive one) unless your going to custom weld a tube for it somewhere on the exhaust.

Use this header
http://racingbeat.com/FRmazda2.htm
And then either the presilence with air pipe or a Bonez high flow cat with air pipe if smog testing is a n issue where you live.
Here ia a picture of my set up

I have an 88 GXL.

I bought the one without the nipple. Reason being because my 5/6 port sleeves were removed. But, I planned on having them activated electronically instead. Therefore there wouldn't be any reason to have the nipple.

If you still have your stock 5/6 sleeves in, then I say get the one with the nipple, and just hook it up that way. Less of a headache.

if I buy the one with the nipple on it how do i hook it up. because I saw a hose come from the air box to the air pump but did not go near the 5/6 ports. and smog testing is not an issue.

I am not sure on the hookup, but I think you just run a tube from the nipple to the tube that the actuators are hooked up to?

I think there should already be a little tube that runs from your exhaust to somewhere near the 5/6 ports.

check the FSM.

Good luck.

The one without the tube is for the S5 since it uses the airpump to actuate the 5/6 ports.

Read what RB says about installing their header on an NA car. As I recall, they advise against it and recommend the down pipe and pre-silencer combo instead.

Here's what RB has to say about using their header in a 2nd gen.

"For optimum performance gains for this application, we recommend that a header be used on an engine configured with a carburetor intake system. For this reason, we suggest another suitable configuration for use on a fuel-injected engine is the Racing Beat Catalytic Converter Replacement Pipe with Presilencer combo."

Don't waste your money on the RB powerpulse pre-silencer!!
Exhaust tone AND the gain in horsepower are damn near identical between the presilencer and the bonez free flow cat. And I know thissssss maaann!

in my experience with the S4 setup, especially now that the cars a quite old, the stock system doesn't work all that great. if you still have an airpump i'd recommend hooking it up to that with a solenoid (similar to what the S5 has). i'm just saying that if you actually test it out, you might find that the ports might not open properly or at the right time, and you just wasted a bit of money.
