Race-ability? TII vs. N/A

Hi,
With any luck i will be purchasing my first RX in the next few months (YAY!!). However, i have an important question. I will most likely end up racing the RX-7 (Road racing[on a track], autocrossing) and i was wondering what classes/groups will the NA / TII be eligible for (when lightly modded...) I personally have a thing for TII's cause I like turbochargers... (mmmmm...turbo-ie goodness!) but would gladly drive an NA as well.

So yeah, any/all help is appreciated!

jeez a little impatient eh?

if you want to road race then you can't have a turbo, pretty much the only road racing I know of is SCCA and turbochargers are banned, so that pretty much says it all...

Personally, I would say to go with a ported N/A like either a Bridge Port of a Peripheral Port. You can get higher revs and probably a little bit better engine life. But I don't know much about regulations, so that's just my little $.02

My, but you are the impatient one. Go to this site http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/ and you can see where the TII and NA models are in stock classes. My guess is that the TII will be less competitive in its class than the NA. However, you have to know that the MR2's are very quick in ES. You can also look at the legal mods for Street Prepared and Prepared.

Don't listen to anyone telling you to port your engine. That automatically puts you in Prepared which essentially means you have to build it into a track only car if you want to be anywhere near competitive. Have fun with it!

yeah I raced a mr2 w/ mine. Our times were close. BUT if you get someone who knows how to drive in a 1.6 miata it is over. They are just too light and tossable

If you are serious about racing what you buy I would suggest you buy a rule book first. That way you can also see what you will be running against. Goto this site and surf around. You will want at a minimum the soloI/II rules book.

www.scca.org

Back to your original question. I would go N/A and let me tell you why. The best way to make your car faster in an autocross is seat time, seat time, seat time, seat time, etc............. Do you get where I'm going with this. Learn to drive the car first and then start modifying suspension and engine later after you learn more about whats allowed. Don't rice your car out with questionable bolt on parts. Normally that will put you in a class that you never be competitive in(CSP). Just get the best stock N/A you can afford and start driving it and modify it later.

I am with F prep SEAT TIME!!! Those cones are a lot harder to go around PERFECT then you would think. I popped my engine at the end of last season (smoked out the parking lots at every event after mid summer) so I am doing a rebuild w/ a street port and gutting the car out. I would suggest staying stock though and learning.
