turbo play.....

Surprisingly, the play in a good turbo feels significant, but in reality is only a few thousands slop. There should be very little to non perceivable for-aft slop (hard to feel with hands) and little side to side / up - down movement. If its excessive you'll have oil blow by either in your intake or turbine side OR both. Look for oily intake ducts (after the turbo) and or smoke from your exhaust. NO you cannot tighten anything to reduce slop, it needs a rebuild if its bad. If you car boost fine, I wouldnt worry about it, when it goes bad get one used off the net or get it rebuilt with upgrades....OR go full T04

as long as it isn't moving foward-backward, or coming in contact with the housings, you should be fine

Thumbs up

Play is normal, even on brand new turbos there will be a bit of play. just so long as the shaft spins freely and the fins dont touch the walls you're ok.

This is what the FSM says. Smooth rotation & no housing contact or "excessive loud noise".

A little play up/dwn is necessary for the layer of oil that the bearings spin in.

I hear that siren noise from time to time to. It is usually accompanied by flashing blue lights. And I dont have a turbo. I think this is a common problem for all of us....

Yeah, Heffboost has it right. There actually needs to be a little bit of play, because when the car is running, and oil is going to the turbo, the oil makes up for the play, and makes everything nice and tight for quick spinny stuff .
