quick starter question

Question quick starter question

I need to test a starter to see if its still good. It's out of the car right now.

Turbo 2 starter

it has two bolts and one prong. One of the bolts has a wire that goes down to the bottom part of the starer

which ones are negative and which are positive?

the one that's negative will be connected to/have continuity with the starter body. the positive is usually the largest terminal on starters.

its not working... with the cables switched around the gear will come out, but not spin. Then the wire will start to melt, lol.

Can I make the starter engage w/o having an ECU in the car? I need to do a compression test and I have no wiring harness or computer. I can only get 15-20 psi cranking it with a wrench

All the starter needs is battery power. ECU doesn't effect the starter.

When I turn the key I get nothing. Battery is fine, I got my sunroof working today.

Its an s5 turbo 2, I don't know how the security system works with these.

no, the one that is in the car works fine or atleast it did before I sold the wiring and ecu. The one I have out of the car worked, but that was a year before it was put on a shelf. I really need to get this compression check done, so I was using the old starter to figure out how to jump the one on the car and get a test done.

If the starter is on the car, use a screwdriver to jumper b/t the small blade and the large wire on the starter. Car out of gear so you won't run yourself over.

if it is not on the car, use jumper cable... neg on body, positive on the terminal..

Used a wire to jump the positive to the prong. That fired it right up. Now with the prong on and I turn the key with the clutch in, I get nothing. It does make a click behind the logicon.

I don't know exactly what happens when you remove the ecu and harness, but the heater does not blow, non of the lights on the logicon work, and it gives a low water/oil buzzer.

now that I think about it, I removed the ecu in my s4 turbo 2 and it wouldn't turn over... I basically have to rewire the starter since I have a haltech then.

If the starter is just layin on the ground..get a set of booster cables..on one side of the cables you have a good battery..the other side of the cables ,put the black clamp to the starter housing..and the red one Touch it to the threaded partof the terminal ..where the Big wIre was Going To the Starter Before..If the starter Does Not DANCE ON THE FLOOR..IT IS SHOT..(it should jump because the starter will turn when you touch that ternimal..may scare ya a bit) ..simple solution..buy another one..

yeah, I determined my spare starter was dead, the one in the car works great. I just can't get it to turn without jumping it. There is some sort of security with the ignition and the ecu.

by the way the ground is just the body of the starter it gets grounded when you bolt it to the engine. i had the same problem with my car and it was the security system

Try checkin fuses..up under the driver's side dash..in the corner,,on the kick panel,,there's a 15 amp engine fuse there..you should also see if you are gettin 12 volts to the starter..when the key is in the start Position ..THIS will require SAFETY..so take the appropriate meaures for this..you are lookin for 12 volts at the small wire to the starter when the key is in start position...If there is ..replace the starter..if No voltage then you may have a couple more things to check..like wiring,security alarm..That's a start for ya..(no pun intended)

starter in the car is fine.

I checked the engine fuse and it was good. The fuses under the hood are all good. I'm gonna find a local s5 ecu I can borrow to see if the car starts then.
