quick question..

hi everyone!

pardon the newbie-ness, but i just did a search for info on my 87 t2's lsd. i bought my t2 rather recently and i think its still stock, although i have some loose plugs under the hood (emissions removal?) anyways i was talking to my girlfriends friends boyfriend who owns a 240 about car stuff and he asked me what type of lsd do i have. now, im new to this whole lsd thing too, so....are there different types of lsd units that come stock for fc's? are s4 lsd's different from s5's? whats the pros and cons of having either or?

thanks for any help in advance...

You have a clutch type LSD if you have a 87 Turbo.

Advantages: faster lock up, high power handling, and rebuildable
Disadvantages: wears out and needs rebuilding, requires LSD additive in gear oil.

Other types of LSDs found on FCs include the Viscous (89-91 Turbo) and Torsen (91 Infini) types which have their own advantages and disavantages

ah, i see....

now...how do you tell it needs rebuilding? yeah, granted its an old car and all and has seen over 100k miles, its probably got blown (or close-to-blown) parts all over. what i mean is, is there a simple method of checking if its still in good condition? and well, the most important thing, because im a cheap fukk (as im sure of everyone else out there), how much should i pay or how much would you all pay for an lsd rebuild?

thanks for the info icemark

A clutch type LSD will act like an open conventional differential if it is worn out.
