Quick engine removal question
Im removing my engine with tranny still attached. Is it ok to remove the engine with turbo and downpipe/ cat still attached? Since its sort of tucked close. Looks like it will clear, but Im not sure. Thanks

well maybe Im not using the right name for the part. the part thats bolted directly to the turbo. about a foot and half long, around 9'' across. I figured that was a pre cat or something, forget what the thing actually is. I unbolted the exhaust on the lower end of that part, so the main cat and rest of the system is seperated, and about to be dropped so i can reach the driveshaft
I took mine off with the downpipe on, but then again you are planning to remove it with the transmission. Either way it doesn't really just make sure the car is high enough off the ground so that the transmission won't hit the floor. I feel like posting a pic of my removal just cause...

You might want to consider a load leveller to prevent dinging up your firewall/trans tunnel. You'll also need to lift your car fairly high off the ground.
I typically install/remove engines this way... I use a load leveller with an overhead electric cable winch, 16fpm line speed.

Right now I just have all 4 corners up and am under the car undoing all the mounts and removing driveshaft and exhaust. Once I get everything loose Im going to take it off the stands and roll it under my A frame pulley and take it out, so i guess itll have to be re raised. At least the front anyway. i was sort of expecting that though. thanks for the help guys. I was dreading having to shove my arms up in that tight space and struggle to break loose the rusty bolts holding the dp to the turbo

Try undoing that on an ABS equipped car.
Be ready to catch tranny fluid too.
Unless your seals are perfect and your shifter boots are completely intact.
I'm not even sure if that will do it. I guess draining the tranny first is a good idea...
I didn't when I pulled my S5 NA motor with tranny attached, but I had a pan ready anyway. =)

got the exhaust out. i did this with the car on jack stands and ramps, so It was low to the ground and tough to get to some of it. I dropped the damn thing on my head too, put a nice gash on my scalp above my eyebrow
Now I just gotta get this damn driveshaft off. Both of the rear tires are on ramps so ill have to jack one side up enough to spin it and hope it doesnt throw the front off balance and knock it off my jack stands. Also, I will be reusing my stock exhaust for a little while until I get enough for my RB system. what is the best or most prefered way to block off the intake pipe on the side of the cat where the split air pipe was? will a thin piece of steel and some rtv or something be enough? or shoudl i use some thick gasket material

Im not done yet. Could happen. Still have to take my car back off the stands and roll it 10ft forward, then raise the front end back up and crawl back under and loosen the tranny crossmember bolts the rest of the way before itll be free. The damn oil cooler line on the front of the engine was being a royal bitch. Never did get it off there so I took it off at the oil cooler and tucked the hose into the belts
