Questions about "free mods".

I'll be picking up an 86 GXL this weekend, and besides trying to get it running and do some general car-has-been-sitting-for-years tune up related stuff, i was wondering what things I could do once its running.

Anyone have links with pictures for checking/modding the 5th and 6th injectors?

Homemade Cold Air Intakes?

Homemade Grounding kits?

Any other cheap mods that might boost performance.

Car has got 160k on it and has not ran for probablly close to a year, and before that it didnt run that great, so it probablly needs a few "pick-me-ups".

Any help appreciated.

before you get any work done on it, consider whats broken on the car and what you would like to mod, and combine your needs with your wants

for example: my exhaust looks hideous and is falling apart = great excuse to grab a nice new RB catback

not really an answer to your question but its something

No rebuild and i'm not looking to spend the money on one.

I'm getting this car for free and hope to either Auto-X or sell it for a substantial profit.

Anything to make it run better/reliably and look better for cheap is key.

I'll post some pictures of the car up when I get it.

they say that the haynes Full Tune Up is the FIRST thing that should be done on any old rotary. Plugs, wires, cap and button, fuel filter, blah blah blah... An engine that is tuned up will perform much better than an engine with Stuff on it... Then worry about other little mods...

but honestly the best thing you can do for an old tired engine is rebuild it, specialy if the compression is low. BUT then agian thats not in everyones budget... did they say what it did before they parked it?

Check compression. Get it running. Go from there.

Do a complete, and I mean complete tune up. Everything that it is in the manual under tuneup replace it all at one time. That way you have a fresh start. The best mod for an NA is taking out things that arnt needed, and if you dont need the cats jun them and make the AUX ports open off the aor pump.

Search Premix. Pain in the *** but good and semi-free. Great for an old motor too.

Any compression numbers on this thing? Hate to add to the choir but I think that should be step one, before you replace all this stuff on a potentially blown motor. IMO anyways...

You mean 5th and 6th ports? There's not a lot you can do other then make sure they work. http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/6porttest.htm

The ports seem to be a major obsession for a lot of people, and I'm not sure why.

Homemade Cold Air Intakes?
You can search around a little and find them. The Prelude intake is a popular starting point and I believe there is a thread in the archives.

Homemade Grounding kits?
Pointless.

Full tuneup and weight reduction. Also, driver skill mod.

also before you go and put $200-$300 for a tune up, a quick way to tell if you are wasting your time, pull the bottom spark plugs, turn it over and you should hear 3 even distinct "chuffs" on each rotor... itll go back and forth between the front and rear rotor. if they are uneven or it skips one... youve possiably got a blown seal... or it could be a stuck seal but in ether case recomended remedy, REBUILD
