questions about 87 rebuild

First off, yes, imma noob, and I'm gonna use the Atkins rebuld video,my 87 streetport needs a rebuild,it overheated and blew an apex seal and I wanted to do a basic rebuild, and I've never rebuilt a engine, I was wondering what's the best route I can go with this. Which basic rebuild kit should I go with? What else I'm I gonna need? How difficult is it gonna be? And I'm I gonna need to re-surface the housings and rotors? Any suggestion or opinions are welcome, thank you for reading

I'll say it before anyone else does. Please search everything here has been covered many times. If after searching you can't figure somethings out then ask. Members here have no problem helping one another out as long as you honestly show some effort.

If it overheated you probably lost a coolant seal. What does compression look like on both rotors? White smoke out the exhaust and smells sweet? If it's a coolant seal you're going to need a full rebuild kit and prehaps an iron. If you lost an apex seal your going to need a full rebuild kit and a used rotor and housing. These can be easily found in the 2nd gen for sale section. You are going to have to identify the weight of the rotor by the letter stamped into it. According to RR's website you should stay within 2 letters of your rotor weight.

You might be able to throw them in a dehumidifier then seal up the cracks in them with some glue, but most will tell you to replace them.

Have you pulled the engine apart yet? I'll bet you cracked the water jacket on one of the housings. That's exactly what happened to a motor I had that blew a heater hose, overheated for only about 30 seconds, then died. If the car was allowed to overheat long enough to affect performance, there's probably damage to to more than just the coolant seals.

Iron maybe. Must use the manual and precision tools (straight edge, feeler gauges and micrometer/calipers) to determine if the parts are withing spec. Full rebuild kit? No thanks. MANY engine builders will reuse many parts (search). Side seals, corner seals, oil control rings, bearings, seal springs are safe to reuse if they are within spec. I did a lot of searching as I am currently rebuilding. I found many reputable members/engine builders on this board recommend reusing parts. Apex seals should be new though, as well as all gaskets and o-rings.
