I'm sure the Mazda engineers would have made it smaller if they could to help out airflow...

Hello - rorary engines get a big part of their cooling by way of the oil.
That big oil cooler is a big deal.

On the other hand - the engine cooling would be better if the A/C was removed.
But then I wouldn't want to drive in the summer..

Air conditioning is for WOMEN. Take it out, your car will lose better than 50 pounds which equates to gaining 5-10 horsepower AND you get better cooling as a bonus!

I thought this was funny coming from someone living in CT.

I'm a woman, I like my AC when it gets to be 95 and 95% humidity...

50lbs is a lot to remove, but I'd rather just add HP to compensate.

And if you live somewhere were it actually gets warm, you can sweat out an additional 25 pounds worth 2.5-5 HP!

OMG!

When I removed that sucker from my 86 n/a, the engine never got even close to hot. Before, it ran warm no matter what I did.

My 88TII is losing its A/C in spring heh heh - Its hot here in SLC in summer, but dry heat, so no biggie.

The rule of thumb I always heard was that every 100 lbs removed equates to roughly 1/10th a second off your 1/4 mile time. If you're building a race car, sure, bye-bye AC, if you're driving it everyday, eh, personal taste.

I live in Florida. Summer nine months of the year, Spring for three months. The AC stays.

You're right, why didn't Mazda think of that? Oh wait, they did... The cooling system works as a complete package; it's all designed to work together with other systems in the car. The radiator is big enough to cool the engine even with the condensor there.
...is it necessary that it be that big?
That's how big it needs to be to work properly. Any car that has A/C will have one about that size.

I live in texas the land of heat boy. I have no A/c and I am fine and I get no complaints from my Friends or my Girls regular temps here are about 85 in the cool time of the year and 95-115 in the summer I have never had a car with working A/c and I don't bitch at all.

Oh and to the people that don't think the A/c system wighs 50 pounds the pump alone weighs about 20lbs plus about 5lbs in all the lines and that canister thing. the condenser must weigh another 5-10 and the thing that is under the dash is proly heavy too.

hot summers? thats what the sunroof is for. my ac is 3/65, both windows down, sunroof open, and going 65, or faster.

still havent gotten around to taking the ac system out, afraid im gonna break something in the process, but i really want to. what do u do with the tube that runs into the cab? i know that the compressor, condensor, and that the cydrilical thing get removed, but anything else?

the tube that runs into the car has this box thing attatched to it but I think you have to pull the dash to remove it. If you are afraid of breaking something you should not be the pump is easy to take off so are the lines the condenser and the box thing are the complicated ones. I will remove my condensor and box thingie in the summer. I just need to learn how to remove the dash.

I have never been down there so I would not know.
Blower? What is that? the fan for the climate control? what kind of tube is it? maybe you can just make a block-off plate or a cap of some sort. some pics would be nice so i could see what you are talking about. What do you have to do to remaove the dash? How long did it take to take off. If I could do it in a weekend I would do it but no one has said anything about how ling it would take. I still need to remove the condensor but I need to un-bolt the oil cooler to have enough room for that.
