I always reccommend getting a new MAZDA thermostat every time you flush your coolant. (once every two years)

That broken part is a one way valve that connects to the dashpot on your secondary throttle blades. It goes to a line coming out of the back of the thermowax unit.

Yes, those spots in your intake are normal.

Damnit Stop Breakin **** Man!!

LOL, J/K, I'd go ahead and put a new thermostat in while it's out and it yep that is broken, just old and brittle, While your replacing it might take a good look at that line also, those vacumme lines are cheap, I'd go on and replace it also. Heck I'd go ahead and replace all the vacuume lines I could see while you have it torn down, just go buy 10 feet of it at the pep boys or autozone. preventative maintenance!

And yeah, get the MAZDA thermostat, not some aftermarket, there really is a difference.
