Question regarding speaker mounting

I have a 88' 2dr RX-7 2nd gen, and I read elsewhere on the forums that the front speakers for the car are 4x6.

I recently purchased some 4x6 speakers and removed the grille thing on the left side and the long panel underneath the glovebox.
I don't know what the car orginally came with, but there is no enclosure for the speakers to fit into, just the panels themselves.
The person I purchased the car from a while back removed the front speakers and amp he had before selling to me, so I wonder if there are some parts missing.
Looking at the way these panels are, I can see no way to mount these that would look professional and also be durable and help my stereo system sound good.

I searched the forums and there is a surprising lack of FAQ's or howto's regarding speaker replacement for 2G. (lots for 3Gs though, lol)

Does anyone else has experience putting these speakers in that can give me some advice? I'm not afraid to do some modifications if need be.

Most everyone just trashes the front 4" speakers. Their not very efficient pointing at your knees...

If anything, I would get a nice component setup

No FC came with oval speakers, the fronts are 4". You should always inspect the factory speakers (or where they mount) before buying new ones, so you buy ones you know will fit.

It sounds like the mounting panel for the passenger-side speaker it missing. You'll need to replace it or fabricate something. If you look on the driver's side you'll see the size of the speaker that'll fit.

The factory setup had amps for both the front and rears. Rears had an amp on each speaker assy, the front had one amp mounted to the back of the panel under the glovebox. It was in a black box that also housed the speaker for that side, that's probably what is missing on yours. I just went through this about a month ago in my '87, best thing to do is pull out everything, install a new CD player and speakers, and run your own speaker wires. The factory amps don't push enough power to run aftermarket speakers properly, and the radio doesn't play CD's.

I would agree w/ running components, you can put whatever size woofers behind the front panels (bass isn't as affected by direction as tweet), and put some tweeters at the top of the A-pillars or somewhere. Same w/ the back, or make custom mounting panels for some 6.5 co-ax's.

for the back, I got polk audio 6.5 inch speakers that went in very nicely.

When I got the car, the front speakers and amps were gone, and there's all these wires coming out of the front that look like an aftermarket amp was there due to the RCA cables. Unfortunately, I couldn't inspect the old speakers since they were gone and I made the fool mistake of reading a thread in the A/V forums that recommended 4x6's for the front.
They even had an old picture of what looked like a speaker with a huge rectangular amp on the back that looked like it was 4x6.

I got a JVC CD/MP3 player and an install kit, and it's all wired up and ready to go, I just want the speakers to be securely mounted and for it to not be a hackjob.

do you have any idea of the general dimensions of the speaker box that originally came behind the passenger side panel? these speakers came with mounting rings so if the box is wide enough I might be able to mount these up inside.

you all suck, the previous owner managed to find 8 inch speakers in the rear and threw away the original mounting disc to fit the 6.5", but he broke one of the 8"s so i bought new 6.5's because nobody makes 8's anymore, and they are just magnetized to the rear suspension, if anyone doesnt way their mounting discs, ill take them off your hands

8" speakers will fit perfectly in the rear strut towers if you remove the original mounting plates. There will be a small gap around the edge in a couple spots that can be filled with goo tape. I got my 8" mb quart woofers brand new on eBay for about 60 bucks plus shipping. I used Dynamat to seal the open areas around the strut towers. Sounds awesome.

ok let me try again, im not so tired today(this is not meant to be sarcastic, i just also realized how stupid i sounded):

you all suck, the original owner of my car decided he wanted 8 inch speakers in the rear, so he threw away the mounting plates, well he then broke one of the 8 inch speakers, so i got 6.5s because nobody good really makes 8's anymore, so the 6.5's are just in the holes magnetized to the strut towers.

and by the way if anyone has those plates and they dont want or need them anymore i will surely take them off your hands

is that better or no?

Yes but the "you all suck" part illustrates, to a great majority of us, your vast interpretation of the English language coupled with your willingness to help the original poster with his problem, making most of us NOT want to help with your thread-jacked-up attempt at obtaining mounting plates. Kapish?

Tim X-7, if this helps, on my s5 (1990) the passenger side dash speaker (4") was on a mounting bracket that included the factory front speaker amp. I bet if you posted your request in the classified section of the forum someone might have the bracket that they removed from their car.

I am considering making a post in the a/v section of the forum on how I did my system. Having an s5 made things a bit easier for front speaker placement due to the factory locations for 6" speakers. It can be done on your s4, but not as clean of an installation. I used separate components. I used OEM replacement GM tweeters in the dash locations, with soft metal bendable brackets so I could aim the tweeters upward and towards the door panels to reflect the high frequencies off them. I used MB Quart 6 1/2" woofers in the doors (with adapter rings, the stock size is 6") and crossovers mounted next to my amp in the driver side storage bin. On your s4, you can enlarge the opening in the doors and put 6 1/2" speakers there, but you will have to cut a hole in the door trim panels and use a grille. If you have a map pocket in your door panels, this might look a bit weird, but as long as you use separate component speakers, the woofers should sound ok in the doors. I used 8" MB Quart woofers in the rear strut towers, and a JVC double-din head unit with JVC iPod kit.

My JVC didn't come with a usb port. It uses the 12-disc changer port for iPod operation. It is also XM or Serius-ready and has a aux port on the front for other devices.

As for the mounting plates, you might try posting a request in the classifieds section of the forum. Much better chance of finding someone with an extra set there instead of in this guy's thread.
