This is a great idea.

I've replaced many of the clips on my harness, cut off useless ones, and re-loomed/wrapped sections. I think its pretty decent, but if that service could have been done at one time for a few hundred, I think it would have been well worth it. Makes trouble shooting a lot easier when you don't have to worry about harness failures as a possible culprit.

It would also be cool if it could be customized to work with a PFC for example, one of the biggest knocks is that it depends on often-crudy stock harness. A patch harness is cool and all but I'd rather have a fresh harness w/o a bulky patch harness fighting my wideband for space under the ecu cover lol.

As a professional wiring guy, I don't get excited at the prospect of building a custom harness because frankly it's a pain and I remember the first time I had to build one I was not happy. Although it did what I needed it to do and turned out well in the end. I could make a patch harness easily enough or even convert a stock harness to work with a standalone if I was so inclined. Yes even those with CAN connectors. But generally I tell people to take the easiest and cheapest way out so long as the work is done right the first time. and it meets their needs.
So ... any news if you would "do" this service ?

Honestly it's all going to come down to how much interest I get. I would love to say yes because I already do harness work on various cars and have been for 10 years. However, do I want to pay 75/month for vendor status when I might not have any business at all? So I'll say this. I'm not advertising, but if you need help you can PM me and maybe we can get your harness back in good shape. But Hopefully this idea will spread, and I'll be able to justify setting up a vendor account.

that's basically it, from the time i became a vendor here the income it has generated has barely been able to pay for itself. so basically i have worked for free a few days out of my work month developing products to maybe sell one or two here which goes right into the vendor cost to simply have a black font name.

i asked what it takes to get a subforum like the other companies but haven't heard **** about it. i think the new owners of this forum really have no clue who actually built this forum into what it is, it certainly wasn't those companies that sat on here for hours and hours every night helping all the newbs with their issues.. if all the work i did to help people didn't get me business the vendorship certainly hasn't helped one bit so it hasn't been worth a penny.

with the economy in the crapper it probably isn't the best time to go out on a limb if you are expecting to make anything out of it. lately it has been very slow for building engines even though i drive hundreds to thousands of miles to pick up cars and engines, it still hasn't been enough with doorstep service to hardly keep business in the door.

Glad to know I'm not the only one that feels vendor pricing is too much. In the mean time I'll just keep NOT advertising.

The only thing that concerns me about a service like this is that by now, moisture has made it's way inside the individual wires and they are all corroding. How far does this harness rebuild go? Just replacing the few broken connectors? Or replacing EVERY wire that shows signs of corrosion? I can see a few hundred dollars to replace a few broken connectors. But to really rebuild the harness will be many hours, a complete disassembly and replacement of virtually every wire. That gets into some money.

Aaron, there would be a basic rebuild/refurbishment service which would be basically a
once over if the harness replacing broken connectors and such, and a completely new built from scratch option for those that wanted to make a show car and such.

a once over really won't do it on these harnesses. i'm sure you know that mazda's acceptable procedure for building junctions is stripping the insulator back, joining the 2 wires and crimping them with a brass connector and wrapping it up with vinyl sealant tape. those junctions fail regularly so the whole harness needs to be unwrapped and those junctions soldered and sealed properly and the cracked wiring at least cut off and replaced up to 10" from the break, more if the damage is more extensive as i really only have experience with mid-west vehicles which usually are in MUCH better shape than eastern/northern states cars.

Karack, This is exactly what I do when I am replacing or repairing a wire. remove the loom, track back about 10 inches cut; crimp or replace the wire depending on location. seal with heat shrink, replace TS seal, terminal, then connector. Check for other damage check for connectivity continue on with the harness. My issue with soldering is that over time it weakens depending on the location and how often you move your harness and it can break which is a nightmare to diagnose as it becomes an intermittent electrical failure. I personally only use crimps and heat shrink because I've had better and more consistant results. Might not be Mazda spec in that regard, but when a crimp is done properly the new connection is stronger than the wire it's joining. Your right about mid west harnesses being in better shape.
Sorry it took so long to reply. I've been kind of busy this week., and didn't see your post.

My requirements for a "refurb" harness:

- Crimp connections suck, use solder and heat shrink.

- Give me a harness that replaces every plastic "open atmosphere" or "unsealed" (Molex are they?) connector with a rubber sealed connector and plenty of pigtail to splice into my various sensors. Then it will be worth the money.

Painless Performance Products 70402 Painless Wire Connector Kits

- Pack every connector with dielectric grease before you send the harness back
