Remove old shifter ****/lock nut. Lift shifter surround out. Unbolt old shifter. Drop in new shifter lever with new bushings(almost everyone has dead bushings) place shifter surround back over it and thread the new **** on.

Finished.

You don't... you buy a new boot/cap and put it on the replacement shifter.

If you're in a pinch just slit the old one on the side and put it on for temporary use ONLY.

sorry to bring up (and jack) an old thread, but I also do not have the cap thing. When I changed my shifter bushings, I bought a new inner boot, but the metal part wasn't on it, and mazdatrix doesn't even sell that part. My shifter had the metal cap, but the rubber boot part had been cut/ ripped off for some reason. I just put the inner boot on by itself. Should I put the inner boot on top of the metal thing?

this is what i have:

yes, or you can replace the metal ring found on the older shifters with just the new part
