Question about S4 N/A alternator wiring.

While in the process of swapping my S4 alternator for a CS130 105 amp alternator I found two wires in parallel going from the alternator B+ terminal to the battery + terminal.

The 1st was a thick gauge oem wire passing thru the fuse box to the battery post.

The other was a smaller gauge wire running directly from the alternator B+ terminal to the battery terminal. No fuse, just a straight wire.

The FSM wire diagram doesn't show the second wire. Has anyone seen this setup in their cars? And does anyone know why the previous owner would bypass the fuse box?

I did not reconnect the second wire since it's not in the FSM wiring diagram.
