Question about cost for cleaned/repaired rad and alternator
I've gotten a bit of the parts in the engine bay pulled, and I was hoping some people could chime in about projected costs for a couple different things.
1. Radiator cleaning/small fin repairs: There's nothing mechanically wrong w/my rad, as far as I can tell, but there are a few fins that are bent, and it could definitely use a good cleaning inside and out. I was wondering if a radiator shop would do this and how much it would usually cost. I don't really see the point in replacing it if I'm going to keep the clutch fan and shroud, as I don't really have a need for additional cooling at the moment.
2. Alternator. I don't think there's anything really wrong w/the alternator, but with my desire to switch vdi/aux port activation to electrical as well as install an aftermarket amp/stereo combination, I think it might be wise to have it rebuilt/rewound for a higher power output (stock is 70A, yes?), perhaps up to 100A if possible (I've heard of one being wound for 125A, but that may have been FD). This seems like a more practical solution than buying a larger alternator and trying to get it to fit/wired properly w/my car, but I'm not sure how much something like this would cost.

1. Not much, but I dunno. Let's say $30-$60 as a ballpark, but I could be wrong. An electric fan provides less cooling, not more. You need a really strong one just to be adequete. It also draws a lot of electricity. Best bet for now is to stay on top of cooling system maintenance: 12-18 month coolant changes, thermostat changes (always use OEM) at same time, checking hoses, removing air and topping off coolant whenever it's low. You also need the plastic undertray and the foam surrounding the radiator to make sure air doesn't go around the radiator instead of through it. If either is missing, you should block the gap somehow for better cooling.
2. Ya, a lot of alternator shops can do that for a price, both 100A and 125A I think. Another popular option is to get the FD alternator. You need new pulleys, belts and you need to change a wire. A forum search should lead you to a guide.

Thanks for the replies, eric.
I'm not looking to switch to e-fan. I was talking about switching to a Koyo rad or something. But, yes, I agree, e-fan takes up more power than stock clutch fan, and would only make things look better under the hood, and I've already got enough room in there right now.
I've read up on the FD alternator swap, but I'm in the process of getting a side-mount alternator bracket, so I was just thinking it would be easier to keep the same [physical] size alternator so I don't worry about fitiment (am I making that word up? lol) issues.

The factory radiator is higly prone to cracking because of its plastic nature. If you can, go ahead and replace it with a koyo. It's a direct replacement so your shroud and clutch fan will still work with it. Consider it preventitive mantenance.

RE: BLK_FC3S - oh, really? I had no idea...I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for a used one, then. I guess that would help since my coolant level sensor was broken off of the top of my stock rad (had to try gluing the piece together, but the sensor doesn't work anymore.
I guess, even before I go looking for a used, would you get used or new? I would only want to get used since I'm a college student with not too much money right now, though I know that I could be taking my chances w/a used rad (obviously keeping an eye out for reputable sellers, which is most people on here ).

Titanmotorsports sells them for around $300 I believe. Sometimes they come up used but are still 200-250. Get the old style if you want a more factory look. The new N-flow design cools better but doesn't look factory.

Yea, I'll have to see where my budget is. Right now it's at 0, and I haven't even pulled the motor yet. Going to have to find funds for any necessary replacable parts once I pull it apart (already have gasket kit). I'm enjoying taking my time, because it's letting me take pictures of everything and trying to document where everything goes as best I can. You learn a lot more DOING than just READING.
