Question about cigarette lighter

How the heck do you remove the cigarette lighter from the console piece without breaking either of them?? Is it possible... Didn't feel like messing with it unless i knew how to

Yes it's possible. As I recall, there are 2 clips on either side of the lighter looking from the backside that need to be pressed to get it out.

Take off the center vents undo the screws holding the center vents in remove the shifter surround take out the ashtray. Pull up the stereo surround and stick your hand back behind the cig lighter. There are 3 parts to the cig lighter. The black plastic trim, the orange trim and the actual cig light unit itself. You'll kind of have to fiddle with the orange trim since it has these clips that lock it to the stereo surround. You just need to squeeze both sides and it should slide out. Also dont forget to unplug the cig lighter from the back. It has a L shaped black harness plug. It's pretty easy just take your time and dont break anything.

Quoted for emphasis! These car's plastic pieces get REALLY brittle with their age, so BE CAREFULL!

is the orange trim attached to the actual lighter part. How am i supposed to take the orange trim off cause there is no way i can depress the tab on it without breaking it unless im supposed to turn it or something but i cant do that cause they are attached to each other

I think you ARE supposed to turn it. The orange piece, if Im not mistake, has 2 tabs and the stereo surround has two notches. You are supposed to twist until they line up and then push it out.

Have you already got the complete stereo surround out of the car?
Why are you wanting to removed the lighter? (just curious)

OK..if you get the newer rubber ones, then you will need to get the vents also. And for best fit, you will need the shifter surround. Most times you can find them in the 2nd Gen Parts for Sale part of this forum.

If you are DEFINITELY getting a new one, then I would break that one apart (if it is already in poor condition) and then you will be able to see how it was supposed to come apart, and you will be able to put it in the new one correctly. But as far as I know, you just twist the thing until the notches line up and pull it out. And it comes out the front side by the way.

yeah i see that now, cept the only bad thing right now is that orange plastic part is stuck on to the lighter and its already cracked in a couple places, so i think i might be looking into a new lighter too, which i guess isnt that big of a deal. I'll have to be a little forceful to turn the damn thing but oh well if it breaks then i guess ill be gettin a new one. no biggy
