eh here's wut i found out at http://www.lemmings.com/mark/rx7hist.htm

In 1988, Mazda 'freshened' the RX-7, with minor exterior changes, the most obvious of which was the rear lights changing from the matrix of four lights on each side, to the 'rounded' lights on each side. Additional external changes included a revised front fascia, and body-coloured rub strips. The normally aspirated (NA) 13B was bumped up to 160 bhp, the turbo to 200 bhp. Several options and packages were changed, as well. For instance, pre-1988, the aero-effects package consisted mainly of small plastic pieces placed strategically around the body (behind front wheelwell and on the rear lip of the car behind the hatch). After the 'freshening' a much larger rear spoiler became available and appeared as standard equipment on the Turbo II. The easiest way to identify cars made before and after this 'freshening' is by the rear tail lights. The 86-88.5 cars featured two brake lights, reverse and side blinkers arranged in a rectangular matrix. Latter years replaced these with two round sets of lights on each side.

thanx everyone!

Slightly incorrect on dates that's all. The dates he mentions is for the 89+ models which technically started production December of 88.

and BY the way, on the ECU thing... if the first three digits match then you can use the ECU...

For example, you should have a N327 ECU, you could also use a N326 ECU.

But you couldn't use a N338 or N332 ECU, because only the first two digits match.

ACK! well sweet, thanx for the info... i was starting to wonder when a stats page at the homepage said that the 88 na was stock 146hp lol... can you guess what the 89 was? lol but thank you for all your help, i hope to have my rx up and running sometime this week (if schedule permits)... guess only having 146hp means i'm just going to have to port out my engine when i rebuild the motor this spring, and while i'm at it put in a high flow header, cat, exhaust piping, and muffler to help me get it up there so i can do the quarters a lil faster...

thanx everyone!

The other thing to remember is that although the 89-91 NA FC production had 160 HP stock they only had a peak 140ft/lts of torque at 4000 RPM, while the S4 motors had 138 Ft/lbs of torque at a peak of 3500 RPM.

So there really is not that much difference in the motors as far as pull, just the S5 motors have a higher flatter torque curve, and a higher peak HP (which makes the motor seem like it revs better).
