Question Q for those with a hybrid turbo

Has anyone (S4 or S5 peoples) upgraded to a T04 (E, B, whatever ) compressor and not clipped the turbine? Issues? Pros/Cons?

i had one like that, to4e front with a stock rear, in an s5 turbine housing. it worked fine, but it was tricky to get it to have a consistant boost. it would go to 5psi by 3000ish then at about 5k it would kinda spike to 10-11psi and then level out at about 13.

with some work on the boost controller i was able to get it to hit 11psi by 2500rpms and stay there

the fuel tuning was off too, it was rich down low

how'd you fit a to4e with the stock manifolds? did you use a spacer?

RPeck has a T04B with a stock unclipped compressor wheel. I have a T04B with a P-trim, clipped. But my car is still in pieces, heh.

The problem with the stock turbine wheel is that you will not get full boost up top. the power will die down above ~6500rpm because the engine is being choked by the turbine. that is why you clip it. you lose some response but you gain the top-end.

Rpeck has some issues with his clipped wheel but he's not sure what exactly it was, because he had wastegate issues as well (and he's still running stock AFM/intercooler/ecu which would upset things too). Now, i hate to put words in his mouth so i'll leave it at that.

Another issue you need to deal with is boost creep. If you port the mighty hell out of the wastegate... may not be too big of a problem. But if you have a full exhaust system (which you should have if you're going to a hybrid anyway) then you could still see creep. it is a possibility, at least.

Josepi,
From the experiences of people whom have done what you are refering to have dynod at a max of 275HP, spool is descent, and power band is alright, all thaught boost leaks out at the top end of the rpm range.

I have a Hybrid with machined Exhaust housing and T04 turbine, and T04R compressor housing and compressor.

ok i lied i have no idea what the compressor is, its a 3" inlet though, its a tight sqeeze

on my stock port motor, it has power up to 7200+

on cymfc3s's ported engine it did run out of steam at like 6500, where it did 265rwhp@9psi

How much had to be milled out of the turbine housing? Which size injectors are ya using?

Well, you'll be happy to hear that the T04B compressor housing only comes with either a 2.75" or 4" inlet...it seems like the E is the only one with a 3" inlet...

I am not too certain but the housing was milled enough so that a t04 Turbine wheel slightly clipped would fit in the S5 turbine housing. I could only suggest asking your local turbo shop if they could do it. So essencially I have a t04 turbo with a slightly smaller turbine housing! Not too shabby!

Injectors are:
550 cc stock primaries
1600 cc Secondaries

With hybrid you can get only 275 rwhp ?? I thought it was more like 300-325 rwhp. Maybe it's with a streetport ??

fwiw i have never heard of the most rwhp you can get with a hybrid being 275rwhp. hell you can almost do that with the stocker if you have every other mod.

How's the transition when those secondaries come online? If it seems like I'm drilling ya, well...you have a LT8 S5 TII too...hehe

surprised you didn't see this earlier in the year, it was in the microtech section

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...5&pagenumber=1

most hybrids with to4b housings and compressor wheels will max out around 300-330 rwhp depending on your set up.

rxtasy on teamfc3s put down 320 rwhp with a to4b hybrid @1bar with an e6k, old school greddy frount mount, and some big secondaries.

Basically as stated above, the stock turbine will become a small restriction especially in the upper rpms. Clipping the turbine though also forces you to lose some of the responsiveness of the turbo. It's a trade off.

What is the difference between these hybrids and the BNR stage 1 upgrade?.....running stock primaries 720 secondaries FD fuel`pump street port hit 240HP RW at 8PSI. Not sure if that low for what I have.

When they come online it isn't too bad I haven't had the car dyno tunned yet everything that is done is done by me on the abandoned Highway outside my city! So it does get a little rich when they come online but nothing you can notice while gunning it! At least I could not notice them comming online if I didn't know what happens in the map I know I would not know about it!
No worries I don't mind the drillings... I am in the military!

What

I have a 15 deg clip on my stock s5 turbine wheel, and a to4 housing and 60-1 turbine. My car dynoed at 295rwhp running really lean. Once I get the bigger injectors in the primaries i will dyno tune again.

I don't have any top end loss with my turbo. I hit instant boost and it holds to 7.4k (when I have been shutting down on my WBo2 tunning) I am running 12 PSI on my second stage of boost and it holds just fine. I think my prior problem with the clipped wheel was more my wastegate then it was the wheel. But the responce I get from this turbo, and the fact it holds all the way I see no reason to clip the wheel if you have a large anough WG. In my case it's ported to 30mm, with a propper T04 adjustable arm control.

I love it!

Rpeck (or anyone esle this may apply to): are you using the S4 manifold and exhaust housing? if so, with the wastegate ported very large (and larger flap welded on) are you having any problems with boost creep with your hybrid setups? I have a S4 T04B hybrid, v-trim wheel.... and one of my main concerns is that I wont be able to control the creep, even with the big wastegate porting.

Another thing I have noticed is; I see no reason at all I cannot hit 15+ PSi of boost if I want to. Every turn of the MBC it responed by going up to where I set it instantly. I will probally run 15 PSI after I get a FMIC assuming my fuel flow will hold up to that.

here is a pic of my A/F and boost curve.

yes, i am using the S4 stock manifold with a 30mm port on the WG and a added flapper door to cover that hole. I am having no creep problems at all. It is bleeding or adding boost instantly based on the settings of my MBC.

I am not running a stand alone EMS, but it is not the stock ECU, it is modified to adjust timing curves to the max that the stock boost sensor will read 14.7 PSI. Along with some other adjustments. FMIC will be on by summer time
